Clogging the bases is one of the dumbest arguments of all time.

Yes, who cares if a slow guy gets on base... he's only clogging the bases. It's not like it hurts our chances of winning or anything!

I still think a professional baseball player should be expected to score from first base on a double and go first-to-third on a single to RF; but yes, the "clogging the basepaths" does seem a ridiculous argument.  It's not like stolen bases are a huge part of the game anymore.

Here is where the stat guys fail. They can take one season in Giambi's prime and qualify that he was walked x amount of times and that resulted in y amount of runs scored. That would put an end to the clog the bases nonsense. But they (stat guys) seem to act as if this criticism isn't prevalent in some sectors of the baseball world. Debunk the myth, don't simply poo-poo it. The ancient Greeks proved the earth was round, yet it wasn't accepted by the main stream until after Magellan's voyage.

Some things are so inherently dumb that all you can do is laugh at them.

Besides, the "clog the basepaths" crap has been debunked already.

Then why didn't Kenney show the study to Reynolds?

Because it's the MLB Network and not CSPAN?

Cause HR would counter with the tired "you didn't play the game" argument that athletes pull when they lose an argument.

It's a show that promotes the analytic approach to player  valuation. When you have a flat-earther, Kenney owes it to the analytic community to show why that thinking is wrong. Personally I have no idea where this clog the bases nonsense originated. Old assed John McGraw understood the value of OBP.

Dusty Baker's an adherent of the "clog the bases" school of thought.

I'm beginning to think Harold Reynolds is just as bad. They just showed a clip from last year where he said Felix shouldn't win the Cy Young because he lost 12 games.

All those 1-0 and 2-1 losses show a lack of intestinal fortitude.

Ugh. I like Reynolds, too. He was awesome on Diamond Demos.

How sheltered are these guys? Read about what you're supposed to be an expect in. Sheesh.

I'm pretty sure you used it as an argument against sf back in you two's honeymoon period :P

In fairness, it was Carty poking fun of Reynolds, not Kenney.  One of the things Carty said Kenney does is he gets guys who are not saber guys on his show and lets them talk their peace.  Then, as I read it, it was Carty who made the remark about Kenney letting Reynolds have enough rope to hang himself.

Just now:

"Statistics are just shorthand - two numbers will never tell you everything."

So true.  I'm not saying they don't have an important place, but this really resonated with me.

Brian Kenny just said that babe Ruth led the majors in WAR 12 times and one of them was as a pitcher.  I found that pretty cool.

Tony LaRussa claims Pujols would've given the Cards a 60-65 million dollar discount over what he signed for.  They just aired that, excerpted from a phone interview.

They carried the story on Intentional Talk.

It's almost all that I watch in season when I'm not watching actual games.

I know what it was from, I just didn't figure it mattered or that anyone cared

Now they're talking with Keith Olberman(sp?) about SABR stuff...  apparently the Cubs have a deal with Bloomberg sports to create an all-encompassing player evaluation system...  sounds like they're gonna put Linty out of a job :stir:
