It'd be interesting to see the reaction of other NL teams when the Nats made that pick.

Kilgore already cranking out the blog posts.

Even without picking first overall, or even in the top, the Nationals managed to make a major splash and set up a contract staredown with their first choice in the MLB draft.

Glad the signing deadline is closer this year, so we can get a deal done and figure out the future sooner. If surgery is necessary, better to make that decision sooner rather than later.

Rizzo seems to take early draft BPA to an extreme and even isn't scared by injuries, and this has put him in stark contrast to other GMs when you look at the last 5 years. It's interesting how scared most GMs play the draft compared to teams like the Nats, Pirates, and a few others.

I love it, and it has the draft experts drooling.

does boras advise giolito?

No.

Lucas Giolito is "advised" by CAA. Same high-profile agency as Ryan Zimmerman, Drew Storen and John Lannan.

one thing I always see from writers and baseball people is that everyone should take BPA.  Fortunately, it seems quite a few teams don't actually adhere to this, or more likely, don't have any type of long term view of their franchise.  Say what you want about Rizzo and the construction of this year's roster, the dude knows what he's doing in the draft.

Those were both picks that both sides were fairly sure the nats would draft them.  Zim actually signed for under-slot as well if I remember correctly.  That won't be the case this time around.

except gio throws 100 mph.  i'm really excited

He models his style on Verlander, which means he'll dial that down on purpose. Most of the time.

well he's apparently healthy now.  he was checked out by doctors and they all said that he didn't have structural damage.  He was throwing off flat ground prior to the draft.

I talked with Nats scouting director Kris Kline last fall about who'd be the 1st pick, assuming it wouldn't affect the Nats. He said Giolito

Just said the same thing to my wife. Great to see a kid so excited and happy that his hard work paid off.
