Yeah my best hope for him is to start in Hagerstown and make it up to AA and do well enough there to start the next season in AAA and be a September call up.

3. Matt Purke, LHP
DOB: 7/17/90
Height/Weight: 6-4/180
Bats/Throws: L/L
Drafted/Signed: 3rd round, 2011, Texas Christian University
2011 Stats: DNP
Tools Profile: High-upside left-hander, but one with considerable risk.

Year in Review: Entering the spring as a potential number one overall pick, Purke did not pitch well, suffered through shoulder problems, and fell to the third round, where he signed for a $2.75 million bonus.
The Good: The 2010 version of Purke profiled as a front-of-the-rotation starter. His low-to-mid 90s fastball can be as notable for its movement as much as its velocity, and his slider is a potential wipeout pitch with heavy bite. His changeup is at least average and he throws it with confidence.
The Bad: Purke's stuff was all over the board in 2011, and he showed just average velocity in the Arizona Fall League to go with flat secondary offerings. That might be rust, but there are concerns that his shoulder issues could become more regular due to an arm-heavy delivery that requires significant effort.
Ephemera: While it's a bit of a moving target, Jake Arrieta is already the all-time wins leader among pitchers drafted out of TCU with 16.
Perfect World Projection: Star-level starter.
Fantasy Impact: At this point, he's a risky investment.
Path to the Big Leagues: A return to form will rocket Purke up the prospect lists, while a repeat of the 2011 version will cause him to plummet. We'll see what we get when he begins the year at one of Washington's lower-level squads.
ETA: 2014

"I liked his delivery," Johnson said. "I liked the way the ball came out of his hand. He looks good."

Purke won't see a lot of action in games this spring. Johnson said he might have him pitch in the March 2 exhibition opener against Georgetown University (stats from that game don't count as official spring training numbers) and perhaps an inning or two out of the bullpen once Grapefruit League play begins.

I hope he does well. Really think he could also fly through the minors.

Im curious to see how cautious we are with him this year. With him only pitching 50 something innings last year, Im sure we're going to be very careful with him this year. Hopefully he's healthy enough and we allow him to get up to 125 innings or so.

Potomac 1/2 year, then Harrisburg. Next year he begins AAA, and then, maybe...

That's my best guess. Build up his strength for a long profesional season. And the Nats are not thin at starting pitchers right now. (Amazing thing to say. I'll repeat: this year's team starts with the best pitching in my lifetime, and I remember back to the 1953 season. Some lucky years the Nats had one ace, but this...)

any reasons behind Purke's delay? I thought he was having a good spring?

Byron Kerr ‏ @bkerr32
I cant be specific but its not a major deal, they want to lengthen him out and build strength

Purke is coming off a pretty major shoulder injury. They need to be careful with him.

A technicality.  He isn't actually injured, they are just delaying the start of his season like they did with AJ Cole and Robbie Ray last season (and this season for Ray).

Nationals pitching prospect Matt Purke will make his professional debut Wednesday for Hagerstown, according to a club source. Purke will start for the Suns, the Nationals' Single-A affiliate, as they finish up a three-game series with Greensboro.
