I know you know that's not relevant here.

Why not just point out the Braves and their 277 Division titles?

Nats attendance will rise and fall with playoff appearances and lack thereof.  Just as it did for the Caps.  Just as it did in Philly.  Quit trolling, you're not fooling anybody ;)

Yet another moron.

Caps playoff game, mid-April, schoolnight, etc. etc.

Monkeys with typewriters, these guys.

He's trying to be snarky, says similar type stuff about a lot of teams.

Orioles:
Quote
Matt Wieters' two homers didn't hurt, but in the almost-as-promising category are Jake Arrieta's seven strikeouts and one walk in 6 2/3 innings. The Orioles need pitching like my kids use the potty: badly.

Padres:
Quote
A while back, I joked about Jeremy Hermida's presence on the Padres roster. Yesterday that was rectified when... no, wait, Hermida was hitting cleanup yesterday. Never mind.

Yeah, it bothers me not because it's bad analytically (which of course it is), but because it's not funny.  Just like the tired Teddy-always-loses gag.

What I'd like to see is someone to notice that attendance is up, big time, vs. same stage last year.  Those 16,000 - 17,000 crowds would have been 11,000 or so last year (OK, maybe not for novelty Stras, but even by his final september starts attendance started to taper off).

I don't think the Caps playoff run really affects attendance that much.  Just a guess, but I doubt there are 5000 Old Chelseas who go to both and make a choice.  Even the Old Chelseas have their season tickets, so they count as tickets sold for the Nats.  I don't think there is 1000 who go to the Caps, don't have season tickets to the Nats, yet would have walked up to Nats Park but for the conflicting games.  Maybe there are a few folks who :glug: who went to bars to watch both at once, but I don't think that depressed turn out by 10,000 butts.

7) – (Last Week – 16) - I didn't mention this above: The starting pitchers have a combined 1.69 ERA. So John Lannan was definitely being reasonable when he was angry for not making the rotation, right? (Cough, cough.)

And here is the “above” part he mentioned in the blurb.

Power Rankings: Jump on the Nats' bandwagon while there's room
By Matt Snyder | CBSSports.com Baseball Blogger

The Washington Nationals are 9-3.

Read that again.

Yes sir, there's great baseball being played in Washington. The best the Nats have ever started through 12 games was 8-4 in 2005. The last time the franchise started this well was all the way back in 1981, when the Montreal Expos stormed out of the gates to a 10-2 mark. But that wasn't in Washington. The last time a Washington franchise was 9-3 was the 1951 Senators (uh, they finished 62-92).

Could this be too good to be true? Not really. I mean, obviously the Nationals aren't going to play .750 baseball all season. No one is, because that would be a 122-60 record. But there are reasons to believe the Nationals aren't blatantly overachieving.

First of all, they're doing this without Michael Morse. He led the Nats last season in hits, runs, doubles, home runs, RBI, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage (obviously OPS and OPS-plus, too) and WAR among position players.

Closer Drew Storen is also on the shelf. The Nats have four saves in five chances so far, sure, but they're using their normal seventh-inning tandem in the ninth. So it's an issue of depth.

Yes, some of the guys off to really hot starts will come back to Earth. Wilson Ramos, Danny Espinosa and Ryan Zimmerman are going to hit better, though, and they've already started to come around to different degrees. Don't discount swagger either. This is an up-and-coming team that has never won together ... until now. That changes things, whether the number crunchers want to admit it or not, in a mental game like baseball.

And did I mention a possible promotion of Bryce Harper at some point?

Simply: If you're a Nationals fan and you aren't excited, you don't have a pulse.

Does the same hold for Wang when he comes back and replaces a better pitcher?

10K losses in Philly says otherwise. :stir:

The last time the Phillies had a losing season, they had lower attendance for the year than the Nationals have EVER had since returning.

Eh, hair splitting since they could have went 81-81 if they had played 162.  2000 was really their last losing season.

BP:  Nats bumped up to 3rd today.

Is it time to take the Nats seriously? Depends on the importance you place on strength of schedule. Washington has played all its games against the Cubs, Reds, Mets, and Houston. So, no, probably not yet.

We need a general "The Nationals have been disrespected" thread because I have no place to put this because it's not a media power ranking and it's not ESPN.  Though if this was a ranking, it would rank us behind Cincinnati.

5. The week ahead

Losing Sunday night's Yankees-Red Sox matchup to rain was a bummer, but the consolation prize is that CC Sabathia has been bumped to Monday night's game against the Rangers in Texas, which will pit him against fellow lefty Derek Holland in what, on paper, is the must-watch game of the first half of the week. The Rangers and Yankees are arguably the two best teams in the American League. The two-time defending pennant winners in Texas have the league's best record and the Yankees, who had the league's best record last year, are just a half game behind the Tigers for the second-best AL mark in the early going. Sabathia, despite his usual slow start, is the Yankees' best pitcher. Holland, who turned in one of the best starts of last year's postseason in Game 4 of the World Series, is finally fulfilling his considerable potential and has three quality starts in his first three turns in the early going with 20 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings.

Elsewhere, this week brings a handful of matchups that could have wild-card implications, including the Rays hosting the Angels, the Reds hosting the Giants, the Diamondbacks hosting the Phillies, and the Dodgers hosting the Braves.

As we've all said a million times, media rankings have no bearing on the results on the field. So... why worry?

4. Washington Nationals, 12-4 (58 RS, 45 RA) (Last week: 7)

Sometime soon, we'll do a deeper dive into the excellent rotation the Nationals have built, and what it means for the playoff chances of a franchise with only one postseason appearance in 43 seasons (zero in seven seasons in D.C.). For now, just consider the following:

• Since returning from TJ last September, Stephen Strasburg has struck out 49, walked 8, and allowed 2 extra-base over 49 innings.

• Of the top 15 pitchers in Major League Baseball ranked by xFIP this year, four start for the Nats.

• You can run this exercise with nearly every team (and we will, soon), but it warrants mentioning that the Nats have already lost two games that arguably turned on terrible umpiring: April 9 against the Mets on a blown call at second base, and the Laz Diaz Game of Death April 15 versus the Reds (hat-tip to @willbhenline).

All of which is to say, the Nationals are pretty damn good, and they've got a chance to win this thing. (Warning: This offer may not be valid if Ryan Zimmerman's shoulder injury proves worse than they're letting on.)

Yup.  I'll assume he meant 122-40 which is about .750.

New ZiPS projection has the Nats finishing 88-74, 3 games back of ATL:

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7876996/with-bryce-harper-cliff-lee-dl-philadelphia-phillies-no-longer-projected-winner-nl-east-mlb?addata=2009_insdr_mod_mlb_xxx_xxx  30.9% chance of making the post season.

Quote
No team in the division has done more to help itself this season than the first-place Nats. While Stephen Strasburg's durability in the long haul is still a question, his post-Tommy John performance isn't. These projections were made with the expectation that the Nats keep Bryce Harper in the big leagues, and even with ZiPS not expecting him to be a star quite yet (projected line for rest of the season: .240/.319/.401), he's a solid improvement over Rick Ankiel (rest-of-season ZiPS line of .232 AVG/.291 OBP/.387 SLG) and Roger Bernadina (.234/.298/.363).

ZiPS projects a great deal of regression from Ross Detwiler -- his FIP well more than a run higher compared to his ERA, and he doesn't have much of a resume of success starting, but he's looking less and less like a potential disaster. In the lead by a half-game at the moment, Washington now has to play only within six games of the Marlins and 3.5 of the Phillies to finish no worse than second in the division.

8 ) – (Last Week – 9) - You know what I find odd about Stephen Strasburg's innings limit? He threw 39 pitches in the first inning Tuesday, many of them in high-stress situations. That counts the same as a seven-pitch inning.
