There are a number of good folks resting eternal in Arlington and elsewhere that would likely disagree with your cynicism...but more likely they would simply let you bloviate...

Oh c'mon ImRef - the announcements are portrayed as a public service announcement.  Recruiting is so much different, for recruiting is the active effort of getting people to JOIN the military and FIGHT for our country.  The NFL announcements are just trying to gather support from non-military folks for the efforts made by military folks.

i'm not bothered by this, I don't see it as any different than any other money spent on recruiting.

That really isn't true Slate.  Patriotism is the support of the country and the country's goals.

So is 95% of all patriotism.

No

Patriotism is devotion to one's own country and concern for its defence. Frequently compared or contrasted with nationalism, which is devotion to one's own ethnos.

Well, it's sneakier for one thing.  Though not anymore.

I'd like the Nats to put America the Beautiful (Maybe the Ray Charles version) in place of GBA, which I hate.

I don't care, I'm not taking my hat off for either one of them.

Me either but I love Ray Charles' version.    I may not take my hat off but it'll bring a tear.

Open question - Should the military advertise for recruits at all?

If you (the public you) want to enlist, you know where the recruiter is.
Should recruiters visit high schools seeking enlistments?

Definately.  Even though the military isn't for everyone, it is very beneficial for many blue collar students

The answers are either "yes" to both, or reinstituting the draft.  Are you proposing a draft in lieu of recruitment?

Thanks for the fix TT.   I was discussing this with a neighbor and he made a similar comment about some kids have nothing else to do.  I told him it's awfully nice for the well to do or connected to let our kids die for their country.   We are forever grateful.    These "blue collar" kids have dreams, hopes, skills, etc.    Why is it their only way out?    Why don't kids in Bethesda have an obligation to enlist/serve?    Therefore, I submit that mandatory service is the great equalizer.    Everyone at 18 has 18 months of mandatory service.   We can work out the details.   Not everyone's cut out to be a Marine or an infantryman (person) but everyone can serve.    Gotta have skin in the game.    Nothing better than watching Biff puke his guts out after a forced march.

If marketing and incentives are needed to fill the ranks, then I don't mind advertising.  I do mind deception when you do it, which gets back to the original post.

I also wonder if there's something else other than recruiting the military thinks it is buying by flyovers, appearances honoring troops, etc...  Are they trying to buy support for the next fighter or bomber?  Are they trying to mobilize voters to support a deployment?  Brass pressuring Congress? That gets really shady, I/M/O.

At the Pentagon level, who knows.   At the pilot, casket bearer, marcher in a parade, airman, even generals, etc. level, it's usually heart felt solidarity and respect.    It's Congress that's full of faux "warriors".

The career Pentagon brass know how to design procurement programs to make sure lots of Congressmen have a stake in a program.

I would. Politicians would be more careful dealing with draftee's lives and the burden of service would fall more evenly.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2013/02/19/stanley-mcchrystal-says-the-u-s-should-reinstitute-the-draft/ - It's a quick read and McChrystal summed up the argument pretty well
