Tied for as good a record as the team has ever had in its DC history - matching the 2005 high-water mark of 50-31 on July 4.

Not quite the same winning percentage.

Nationals Have Been Dominating

From Elias: The Nationals defeated the Brewers on Thursday, 8-2, and they have won their last six games, scoring at least five runs and allowing no more than two in any of those games. Only three other teams in major-league history have had a streak of six or more games scoring at least five and allowing no more than two runs: the 1961 Yankees, 1941 Red Sox (a seven-game streak) and Cincinnati of the Union Association in 1884.

No, but once they had played as many games as this group, the 2005 Nats didn't quite have the same winning percentage either.   ;)

And they will get better in about a week when Werth comes back. You can argue that he will replace Bernie and Bernie has been hot lately but Werth has bona fide pennant race and playoff experience.

Absolutely not.  Werthless will bring this team down.  Mark my words.

He was very good this year before he got hurt. Your Werth hate is tiresome.

And this is the SSS Thread Damnit!

Pah.  You're slipping.  The MDS I know would have worked the phrase "needledick" into this post at least twice.

And why do you pathologically hate Werth?  Are you afraid his beard will eat you?  Do you worry that you'll get lost in his big dreamy, gooey chocolate chip eyes?  Do you secretly hate The Edge and Werth just looks so much like him that your hate boils over?

I think we ought to get to the bottom of this - you seem to be holding a lot of rage.  That's bad for you, man.   ;)

He was very good this year before he got hurt.

Guys coming back from wrist injuries tend to have trouble driving the ball, at least initially.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Werth drags down the lineup a bit with his return.

He comes across as a miserable jerk and his strikeout strut just adds to that.

Let's try having an open mind and giving Werth 10-15 games after he comes back before raging on him

Last time a Washington baseball team was 20 games over .500 this late in the season -- skipping '45, which was a wacky season anyway -- was July 1, 1933. The "Wrecking Crew of '33" beat the Tigers 11 - 3. See: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/DET/DET193307010.shtml

That team, with Joe Cronin, Buddy Myer, Heinie Manush, Goose Goslin, Ossie Bluege, won the pennant. Last Washington team to do that. DC was a loyal baseball town right until Bob Short pulled out.

It's all coming back, and it will be great.

By the way, the Nats (aka "Nationals" officially, but often called the "Senators" for reasons that not even Shirley Povich could learn) finished second in the AL in attendance that year, drawing about 437,000...the town was smaller, the park only held 25,000 seats (about 15,000 decent ones), and '33 was the middle of the Great Depression.

The Browns drew 88,000 for the season.

GREAT POST!

Ever read "THE WRECKING CREW" by Gary Sarnoff?  Its about that team!

Yes! My son gave it to me a couple of years ago. I had given him "They've Stolen Our Team", by Steve Gough. I just finished a beautiful book abouit the 1969 team, "A Whole New Ballgame", by Stephen J. Walker. The book starts and ends with the 30-year reunion of the team, in between tracking the season with descriptions and interviews with the players and fans. So many loving memories, so many insights from players who had been on bad teams, guys like Eddie Brinkman, and the feeling of finally being on a winner. So many stories about Frank Howard.

As one fan says: "My Dad took me and my brother to a game at RFK Stadium. That's the first time I saw Frank Howard. I've been hooked on baseball ever since. When Frank came to bat, he was our hope for scoring. Once he said, 'To be a major leaguer, it's not just the talent you have, but how you treat other people'. He's a prime example of that; a wonderful human being".

I googled around a bit and I think that's David Gough.
