John Lannan dominates in first AAA start
« Topic Start: May 16, 2007, 10:35:04 PM »
Where did this guy come from?  I'll have to go watch him pitch before he moves up to AA.  He won his 6th game tonight improving his record to 6-0.  His line from tonight's game against Myrtle Beach: 7 IP 2 H 0 R 0 ER 2 BB 5 K (2.13 ERA on the season).

Drafted - Selected by Washington Nationals in 11th Round (324th overall) of 2005 amateur entry draft (June-Reg).

John Lannan LHSP - The 21-year old left was an 11th round selection in the 2005 draft. In 138 innings for Savannah, Lannan struck out 114 while walking 54. He has three developing pitches in a low-90s fastball, a curve that was sharper & showed more bite than 2005, and an improved change up. He will likely begin the 2007 season in Potomac but will need to build on his efforts of 2006 in order to make his next step.

Sept 2006 extensive interview at:

See prior years' stats, including college:

It sounds like he was a Vermont Lake MONSTER.

Let's not do what the Royals do and has killed the development of their young talent over the past few years and call their players up directly from AA to the Show.  Let him develop, move up to Columbus and make sure he's ready bringing him into the fire, there's no rush.

Lannan has issued 10 walks with 10 strikeouts, so he's hardly ready to be called up yet.

He pitched tonight (June 16, 2007) for Harrisburg against Binghamton.
His line: 6 IP 4 H 0 R 0 ER 1 BB 6 SO (Season ERA in AA: 3.25)
He should be in Columbus by the end of the season.

Yep.  I'm really liking how Lannan is doing.  Balester seems to have hit a rough spot, unfortunately. :?

Lannan has been promoted to AAA Columbus after pitching well in Harrisburg.  At this rate he should compete for a Starting spot in our rotation April 2008.

From Ladson's Nats notes, see below.  Could we be seeing Lannon sooner than we thought?

Minor League news: Right-hander John Lannon was promoted from Double-A Harrisburg to Triple-A Columbus on Monday after pitching six shutout innings against Binghamton last Saturday.

Lannon is a combined 9-2 with a 2.60 ERA in 14 games for Class A Potomac and Harrisburg. Bowden didn't rule out promoting Lannon to the big leagues this year. In fact, amateur scouting director Dana Brown told Bowden recently that Lannon could pitch in the big leagues right now.
"We're very pleased. Spin Williams, our pitching coordinator, and Randy St. Claire, our Major League pitching coach, certainly identified him in Spring Training," Bowden said. "They thought he was extremely special, thought he was a guy who could come to the big leagues quick. Certainly, their judgment is being proven on the field."

I think they'll keep him down in AAA for a while.  Hanrahan I expect will be called up before either of the other guys.

Bowden was quoted in the Washington Post today, saying Lannan will be called up here "any day". Looks like we won't have to wait too long after all.

Pretty impressive.  He keeps that up, we may be seeing him just after the all-star break.
