This was going to be a godawful weekend to begin with with our park being taken over by Philedelphian Asshats. Then we've got to pull Oswalt for the Friday night game where we were likely to have the lowest percentage of Philly fans? Bleh. What few of them have jobs to prevent them from making the game are going to be bused down here in droves for Oswalts first start as a Philly. Why does it seem like every series here the Phillies play the team has some major event to make even more of them come down? Opening day the first series this year, now Oswalts debut. Hopefully Stammen destroys their lineup and we can send them all home as drunk and pissed off. Of course they are on an 8 game win streak, so... Definitely not going to be the most enjoyable Nats fan experience this weekend with all these things combining.

And awesome graphics by the way. Best this season.

The way Oswalt is cropped, it almost looks like a Phillies uniform. Nice.

This kid should be the official game thread starter.   Remember when there was a feud between SF, et al. and 2K6 over who initiated the game threads?

Plus, we throw Miss Iowa to the wolves.   That'll be impressive on Sports Center or the MLB Network.    "Washington boos Miss Iowa !"

This is either Dunn's last game as a Nat or he's a Nat for the rest of the year/career.

Sobering thought. :(

We've beaten Oswalt already and we're starting to scrap together some runs in the last week.  We should feel pretty good going into tonight.  Sure some d-bag Phils fans will act like they did Opening Day when Halladay made his debut in those ugly uni's, but it's up to Stammen to realize this may be one of his last shots to stay in the rotation.  Hopefully he makes the most of it.

Or he played his last game last night.  :?

If Rizzo deals Dunn we best get two major league ready players back or I'll be pissed.

And that's official, from the Nationals' web site:

Miss Iowa to throw out first pitch

The Washington Nationals have invited Katherine Connors, Miss Iowa USA, to throw out a Ceremonial First Pitch before the team opens their series against the Philadelphia Phillies... Friday, July 30, at 7:05pm.  The invitation was coordinated after Tuesday evening's game against Atlanta, when the Nationals' Miguel Batista replaced rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg for the start of the game. Following a successful performance which included 6 strike outs in 5.0 shutout innings, Batista was asked about the reaction to him on the mound and the veteran made an indirect reference to the beauty queen.

Batista has since clarified his statement, saying, "People started booing me, and they hadn't seen me throw a pitch yet. It's like you hear Miss Iowa, and you say, 'Iowa?' And then you see her up close and you say, 'Wow, she's gorgeous.'"  In addition to sending flowers to her home in Bettendorf, Iowa, Batista plans to meet with Connors in person before Friday's game and will serve as the catcher for her First Pitch.  *

WHEN: Friday, July 30
4:30 p.m. - Center Field Gates Open
6:45 p.m. (approx.) - Pregame Ceremonies Begin
7:05 p.m. - First Pitch

*First Pitch catcher is subject to change

It sounds like she may still be pissed off!
   :lmao:

She was on tv being interviewed earlier and she isn't pissed off at all. She said she talked to Batista last night and that everything is all good and it's all in the name of fun. Batista will catch the first pitch and she said she was practicing last night. She said half the time she throws a strike and the other half it goes into the dugout (she practiced with some friends at a local baseball field). She was excited that one of her friends texted her the other night telling her she was on ESPN and then she was flooded with texts from friends about it. She said that Iowans get that sort of crap all the time so she's used to it. She looks smoking hot in the pic with the bikini.

I think it's great press for both parties and it goes to show you what kinda stand up guy Batista is.  Remember last year when Taveras said that comment, the Nats are like the 4 am booty call or whatever.  Totally different right here.

I wondered if Miguel wanted some action so he figured if he ever had a good game he'd use the Miss Iowa quip and this would be his way of getting some.

She's only 20 though so he's almost twice her age. Then again I'm sure you're cool with that Linty.

I think the "* First pitch catcher is subject to change" posting on the Nationals' site was a tremendous joke.  As if she's going to show up and have a fit, in his face.  But will Batista appear on the field in a swimsuit?

"Batista, following a successful pitching performance and Nationals win, was quoted that he understood the fans' response, saying, "Imagine if you go to see Miss Universe, then you end up having Miss Iowa, you might get those kind of boos."  Connors, the 2010 Miss Iowa USA titleholder, took the comment light-heartedly and released a statement to the media challenging Batista to a "duel of skills," if you will.  Connors stated, "I know I can throw a pitch or two. The question is, can Miguel Batista walk the runway in a swimsuit?" Batista's response was the appropriate one, of course, saying Miss Iowa USA is "gorgeous" and sending Connors flowers to her home in Bettendorf.

If the Nationals have any sense, they'll show a video on the big field screen, explaining what it's all about, to fans who don't know what's going on. (They'll have to use small words for the Phillies fans.)

Really hope they send Stras out to catch the first pitch, announce it over the PA, then announce he can't go and Batista is replacing him.  Have as much fun with this as possible.

That's way to clever for the Nats FO to think up.

I'm hoping Dunn gets a standing O when he comes to bat if he is in the line up.  May be our last chance.

(This used to be a Manny Ramiroid ritual in Fenway at the trade deadline before 2008).

Could be rather an interesting evening at the ballpark...in the time since the final out was recorded yesterday, two players on that day's roster have been traded and the rumour mills (and WNFF!) have been spinning about yet another player.
