I want Ross to succeed as much as the next guy, but man I have never seen so much joygasming over 5 innings.
A lefty starter that throws 93 will have 37494798 chances

In addition to being on MASN-2, this game is on channel 50 WDCW, which has varying channel numbers on cable.

This game is being repeated on MASN starting at 5:00 pm.

WDCW is what brought me to the Lavar rant(s).   But hey, I'm on the sunny side of the street today.   Bump him.   Time to move on ...  PLAY BALL   !!!

Lannan was never that bad, and Ross won't be either, but okay.

Lannan was also an above average #5.  Unfortunately, he was frequently disguised as a #3 or #2 or (GULP!) #1.

Ross was a #1 pick. He will, as I said, get tons of chances. I like what 've seen so far.

True.  Though I would be interested to see what the average and median numbers for #5 NL starters was last year.

Detwiler hitting 94 early on. Love that velocity.

I know it's relative in Detwiler's case, but has he put on a little weight?  He doesn't look like quite as much of a beanpole as I remember.

OK Mr. Baseball, give me the typical stats for a #5 pitcher.

I looked at 2011 stats, ranked all 30 MLB teams for WHIP, chose the team closest to average (Detroit), and looked at Detroit's #5 starting slot. In the #5 spot they got 14 starts from Phil Coke (as starter, 1-7, 4.82 ERA, .345 opp OBP, 4.5 K/9), 10 starts from Doug Fister (8-1, 1.79 ERA, 7.3 K/9), and 3 starts from Jacob Turner (0-1, 12.2 IP, 12 ER).

I'm sure I don't have to point this out to you but that's not going to give us anything like average numbers for a #5.  Decent method for pulling something out quick though.  I tried to start figuring it out at BR and gave up after 5 minutes

Maybe tom or someone else with a BA sub can find something :halo:

Yeah, I spent about 20 seconds thinking "is there a database of #5 starters? No, because I don't even know if half the teams had a consistent one." Detroit's a great example of the "#5 starter" being a myth - they bullpenned a prototypical #5 (Coke) for a trade acquisition, so there's nobody who had the spot with regularity.
