Kirk Saarloos  (0-3, 5.09 ERA) will start Tuesday for Cincinnati after making 20 relief appearances. Saarloos lost out to Matt Belisle  for the No. 5 spot in the rotation in spring training, but was promoted to fill in for the injured Eric Milton  , and said he hopes to remain in the rotation.

"Definitely - I'll take the ball and kind of run with it and go where it goes," he told the Reds' official Web site. "If you do good, you'll get more opportunities."

Washington will counter with Matt Chico (3-4, 5.44), who gave up three runs in six innings of Thursday's 4-3 win over Atlanta. The rookie left-hander, who is making his first start against the Reds, has allowed seven runs in 17 1-3 total innings in his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 6.59 over that span.

"He is not going to back down. That's what we like about him. We like his mental makeup," Acta told the Nationals' official Web site.

Saarloos should So Lose.  He did NOT make their Opening Day rotation, and has only pitched as many as 2 innings ONCE this year.  While his career W-L record (all with Houston and Oakland until 2007) is about .500, he's only won 39% of the games he's started.  His career walks & hits per inning (WHIP) rate is over 1.500, so a good team would see enough walks and hits to win.  Only 7 of his 16 starts for Oakland in 2006 were quality starts (6 innings minimum, 3 runs or less).

But the Nationals are DEAD LAST in MLB in both team batting average and on-base percentage.  The Reds have the 3rd highest home runs hit with 55, while we are 2nd worst with 22.  The Reds have made about the same number of errors.  We have a pitcher and park where we can improve our statistics and win the game.  Chico is The Man.

Even yesterday, when they managed to send 10 batters up to the plate in the 1st inning, they came out with the minimum amount of runs for that many hitters in an inning.

Damn.  Nice catch by Griffey.  He's still one of my favorite baseball players.  I just hope he builds toward his 600 against another team.
