White House Down is a fascinating experience. The tone is really odd in that it has Roland Emmerich's standard semi-serious atmosphere with a healthy dose of goofiness, sentimentality, cheesiness, and out of place joking in it. The CGI is abysmal and the greenscreens are even worse, but beyond the technical bits, it makes no sense. The villains are made up of white supremacist mercenaries working for a guy who thinks that nuking Iran will stabilize the world forever or something, who is in turn working with a guy who is working for the military industrial complex to keep wars going because Jamie Foxx's Obama impersonation has brokered a deal for Middle East peace or something and they don't like that. So some sort of liberal nightmare scenario involving all manner of right-wing nuts. I don't know. It's all really muddled and unclear. It kinda sucked, but it was also pretty funny and entertaining. If I had to pick, I'd choose Olympus Has Fallen as the better of the two White House invasion movies of 2013, but White House Down is watchable too. If you didn't like Emmerich's other movies though, stay away, because his style is very noticeable throughout.
