The Cincy broadcasters referred to him as David.

I missed it, where is this David Espinosa stuff coming from?

2 big errors (whatever they were scored) in the first two innings today.

Yeah, that's a huge problem. I can at least sort of live with Espy's inept hitting if he's playing defense at a high level but if he's even average, he's not worth it. And today he was god awful, which makes him completely worthless.

Lombo needs more ABs. I think Espy pretty much is what he is at this point: talented and athletic but won't ever live up to his potential. He's a tease, baseball history is filled with them. Hopefully he can do just enough to boost his trade value so we can deal him soon for a bullpen arm or two.

Danny Espinosa had the 6th highest WAR of all 2Bman last season. You don't deal a layer of his quality (even with his early struggles) for a bullpen arm.

His bat was 15th among MLB 2B last year according to wRC+.  His value was his defense.  If he does not defend well, he is not worth more than a bullpen arm.  Given that his defense returns to elite levels, don't expect to get a lot in trade for a elite defender with a sub-par bat.  A bullpen arm or two is right where Espinosa's value lies.

That's why Elvis Andrus got such a paltry deal. Major league teams don't care about shortstops with average bats and elite defense.

I understand your point considering that his bat is equal in wRC+ value to Andrus and he would play SS on any other club.  Still, I don't think his value is as high as some here think it is.

Spent a lot of time thinking about this topic this morning... and sadly there's just no fit for a trade for a team that needs a SS, has a quality 2B, and isn't in position to contend so they can make the trade without upsetting the team.

National League
Braves - No. Division
Marlins - No. No good players.
Phillies - No. Division
Reds - Need SS. Quality 2B, no trade fit as they can't fill one hole with another.
Pirates - Need SS. Quality 2B, no trade fit as they can't fill one hole with another.
Brewers - Don't need SS. Need 2B.
Cubs - Rich with SS talent. Decent 2B.
Diamondbacks - Rookie SS. Quality 2B.
Giants - Defensive solid at SS. Solid 2B.
Rockies - Star at SS. Struggling 2B.
Padres - Solid regular at SS. Struggling 2B.

American League
Blue Jays - Star SS. Struggling at 2B.
Yankees - Star at SS and 2B.
Red Sox - Star at 2B, need SS, don't fit.
Orioles - Need 2B, solid starter at SS.
Rays - Need SS and 2B. No good fit.
Indians - Full-time starters at 2B/SS.
White Sox - Starter at SS, need 2B. No good trade pieces.
Royals - Starter at SS, need 2B. No good trade pieces.
Twins - Need 2B/SS. No good trade pieces.
Astros - Need SS. Have solid 2B. Just drafted #1 SS last year. They're not going to fill holes by creating holes.
Rangers - Starting SS/2B
A's - Starter at SS, need 2B. No good trade pieces.
Angels - Solid 2B, need SS. No good trade pieces.

Fits
Cardinals - Need a full-time SS... but is one of their many bench guys enough?
Mariners - Need a SS that can hit... but is a challenge trade of Ackley for Espinosa a good thing?
Tigers - Could move Peralta to 2B if they traded for Espinosa, may hurt team.
Rays - Need 2B/SS. Where's the good return?
Mets - Probably best fit, but they're in division... and Murphy is an injury waiting to happen.
Dodgers - Need SS. A year of Mark Ellis isn't worth controlling the potential of Espinosa.

So, that leaves us with in house.

Lombo - Equal to or slightly better hitter, worse fielder and runner... downgrade.
Rendon - Hasn't lit the world on fire with defense at 3B. Can he handle 2B?
Kobernus - Has played some OF in AAA. Looks to be groomed as UTI player, not full-time by organization.

Rock and a hard place, it would seem.

How about a couple of their 100mph relief pitchers. They have plenty to spare.

Linty - You'd move Espinosa to clear a slot for Rendon / Lombo / Walters / Kobernnus.  Don't forget Walters when talking about a backfill.  You don't necessarily need an MI back in a deal.  If TB would give a hard throwing arm, I could see it, but I don't see the deal as Espinosa for McGee.  It'd have to be something off roster.

JCA, as I said you don't fill a hole by creating another none of the potential backfills have shown capable of being a starter, yet.

Benjie Molina for Posey.  You only do it if you have confidence that what is behind can give you the same or better.  I'm thinking with 3 possible backfills, one can pan out.  I'm not saying trade Espinosa for the heck of it, but I would pull the trigger without acquiring a backfill off another roster if what I was getting back was worth it.  A rotation piece if one of our guys goes down, for example.

I'm a huge defender of Espi when his Defense is spectacular.   Usually it is.   Not every position player has to be a. 300 hitter. But now his errors are starting to concern me!
