Follow the Prospects: Justin Bloxom, 1B
« Topic Start: June 08, 2011, 10:06:25 PM »
First Base.  Kansas State University, 22 years old, drafted in the 11th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft (322 overall).

Had a great year in the Sally League until a knee injury ended his season: .309 / .355 / .476 ,  11 homers and 70 RBI in 418 ABs

Got a late start in Potomac this year as he was still recovering from his knee injury, through 31 games .265 / .331 /.460 with 4 HRs, now batting cleanup.

According to Byron Kerr, the team sees him having top-flight potential.

and i have an ulterior motive for posting this thread, we got his autograph the other night at Potomac.  After he signed my son's program he moved on to the kid next to us who promptly asked him "who are you?"  My son responded "Justin Bloxom!" (I had told my son who he was as he walked over to us).  Bloxom puts his hand on my son's head, looks at the other kid, and says "ask him, he knows his baseball!"

Didn't Bloxom have a TV show growing up?  With Mayim Bialik?

Between Marrero, Tyler Moore, Souza, and Bloxom, they should be able to find at least one serviceable 1B at the major league level.  Throw Skole from the latest draft into that mix.  And maybe Kevin Keyes from last year's draft.

Maybe none of those guys will be Pujols, but they should be able to find an Ike Davis or Gaby Sanchez level 1B in there.  Or maybe they can just sign Pujols.

Icy cold the past 10 games at Potomac:  .158 / .220 / .184, in 38 ABs, with 14 Ks and 3 BBs.  For the year, he's down to .266 / .332 / .448 over 286 ABs (78 games), with 9 HRs, 29 BBs and 64 Ks.

Had been hospitalized with an ulcer and released on 7/23, so I'm guessing he's showing some after effects.  Tough year physically, as he started the year recovering form a knee injury.  But his July was terrific before the ulcer:
78 ABs, .346 / .422 / .641, 78 ABs, 14 XBH (4HR), 11/13 BB/K.

Here is a link describing his recovery from knee surgery, his terrific July, his recent scare, and his transition to 3:

Just an excerpt - follow the link to the whole thing.

It did not take long for Bloxom to catch on. When manager Matthew LeCroy inserted Bloxom into the lineup, Bloxom began getting enough at-bats to be at ease and have a plan as to how to recognize certain pitches.

Bloxom came off an accomplished 2010 season in which he gave the Suns a .309 average with 11 home runs and 70 RBI.

Bloxom began showing his offensive skills during a July stretch in which he hit .480 (12 for 25) with two home runs, eight RBI and four doubles. He presently is hitting .270 with nine home runs and 42 RBI.

“I’ve gotten enough swings and seen enough pitching and it took me a little bit to get started,” Bloxom said. “Now I’m starting to feel comfortable at the plate. I’ve seen enough pitching. I can recognize my pitches now.”

Even a recent health scare has done little to shake Bloxom’s confidence. Prior to a game against Lynchburg on July 19, Bloxom was sent him to the hospital with what turned out to be only an ulcer. Bloxom was eventually released.

“It took a lot out of me,” Bloxom said. “It’s a constant grind. But I’m feeling decent at the plate.”

Repeating Potomac.  slow start - .167 / .255 / .271, 1 HR, 6 RBi after PAs in 13 games.  Not in BA top 30, but BA has him as our 4th 1B prospect behind Marrero, Moore, and Estarlin Martinez.

Anything to add?

Bloxom's bat seems to have come around.  After 48 games, he's .249 / .321 / .420, with 6 HR (11 2B), 23 RBI.  OPS of 1.001 over the last 10 games, when he's averaged .303 and hit 3 doubles and 2 homeruns, and drew 7BB in 40 PAs.  Fro the whole month of May, he went .297 / .375 / .538, with 5 HR, 7 doubles, and 12 BBs in 103 PAs.  22 Ks in May, which is a big improvement on April and last year.

Anyone seen him recently or been tracking the P-Nats?

SF reports Bloxom got the bump to AA.  He continued his hot May with a similar June at Potomac, going .291 / .361 / .655 with 6 HR in 55 ABs.  Still a high K rate - 5 BB, 14 K, or roughly a 25% K rate.

At Harrisburg.  Off to a decent enough start.  .323 / .400 / .419 through 11 games and 35 PAs.   At this point, he's 1.4 years older than league average.  No homers yet after a power drop off last year.  Plate discipline has improved - 4 BB, 4 Ks after being between 1:2 and  1:3 much of his career.

At this point, I guess he's just system fodder.

hired by the Nats as a scout.

In other scouting news, the Nationals have hired former Reds third baseman-left fielder Brandon Larson and former Nationals farmhard Justin Bloxom as new amateur scouts. Bloxom spent six years in the Nationals’ minor leagues, reaching Class AA Harrisburg, where he spent two and a half seasons. He was released and finished the year in the Braves minor leagues.

Bloxom, who the Nationals selected in the 11th round of the 2009 draft, is just 26 and decided he wanted to become a scout. He attended scout school. This week, he will meet a few of the current Nationals scouts in Nashville to watch Vanderbilt play fall ball.

“He’s excited and we’re excited,” Kline said. “We know he’s going to work hard.”
