2009/2010 Hot Stove Thread

Just thought I'd make a post where we can list all the moves happening around baseball that doesn't pertain to the Nats. Sources must be posted!

Red Sox acquired outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins for LHP Hunter Jones and LHP Jose Alvarez.

Hermida, the 11th overall pick in the 2002 draft, frustrated with the Marlins with injuries and unexceptional play in four years as a major leaguer and there was no way the team was going to pay him $3 million or so in his second year of arbitration. Still, it's a shame that they couldn't do better than a pair of generic left-handers. Hermida still has a lot of promise. He hit .296/.369/.501 in 123 games in 2007, and he's just going to be 26 next year. The Red Sox may not be content with him as a regular in the event that Jason Bay leaves, but they couldn't pass on the chance to acquire him at this price.

Other MLBTR fun facts:

Phils picked up Lee's option.

DBacks picked up Webb's option.

White Sox buy out Dye.

I really like Hardy. I'm sure he'll have a bounce-back season next year.

If this happens, it is a great move for the Twinkies.  It unpacks the outfield surplus and gets a better glove than O-Cab.

Hardy had 4 years service time coming into this year, and was sent down for part of the year.  B/c he has < 5 years service time, he has 2 more years of arbitration, I think.  He was on a 1 year, $4.65 contract.  since he had a stinky year and the market has corrected, I'd think his max pay would be $5.5m or less.  Maybe $4.5m if the Twins come in at that number.  That's may even be less than O-Cab gets.  If he gets back to his past offense, then this is really nice.  Gomez was nothing but surplus.

It'll also be interesting to see whether Cabrera ends up on of those late signers again this year.  his defense has declined to about average or a little below (using total zone on Baseball-Reference and Revised zone rating per Hardball times), while he's no longer an above average offensive shortstop.

Gomez is a burner, is Cameron's contract up? This could be a win-win.

He's still pretty young too.  He'll turn 24 in December.

So the Brewers are freeing up $14M+. Maybe they'll be a player in the pitching sweepstakes.

By the way, the Bay rumor is ESPN picking up mumbling out of SF from a beat writer who says he wonders if the Giants should be interested in Bay.

Gammons says bay is "brushing off" an offer from the Red Sox at 4 years/$60m.

Can't Chief just set the forum so that links are a different color? This is the only forum I've ever seen where links are the same color as the rest of the text.

So links in posts use the same style as every other link on the forum, which means I can't just change the link color like I thought I could (it would also change the color of pretty much all text...  usernames, section titles, etc.)  This can be remedied, but it's going to be a matter of just how much work it requires...
