Spidey - Funny you mention Drew Bledsoe at the tail end of his career and Mallett.  I've said it before, but a huge difference in Brady and Bledsoe was that Bledsoe always had the incredibly gifted arm while Brady had to get by on game management and judgment before he developed the arm.  You look at Brady's second year (the year he took over for Drew) and the following year and he would not throw deep.  Bledsoe, OTOH, was throwing 70 passes in a game (I think) v Minnesota his second year.  Bledsoe always thought he could throw the ball anywhere and get it in regardless of the coverage because he had always been doing it all along.  Just relied on his gifted arm.  This led to his high interception rate even in his prime.  Long winded way of saying, Mallett and Bledsoe is a heck of a comparison.  The only question is can watching Brady for a few years and listening to Belichek penetrate his skull enough so that he can take the next step, or is he what he is.  Even at that, if he gives the Pats what Bledsoe did his for a 6 year stretch, that's still damn good.

Belichek just likes to collect draft choices so he can trade draft choices.  It's kind of like the way Justin Timberlake just likes to collect [short term acquaintances].

It's a good way to hold on to value that won't depreciate or take up cap space (ie unlike a player)

I remember the game when Bledsoe threw 70 passes. Incredible that he didn't throw an interception in that game. That may have been the only game that entire season in which he didn't throw a pick.   That season he threw over 40 passes in over half of the Patriots' games. Probably threw at least 50 passes 5 or 6 times that season. I remember he threw more interceptions that TD's that season but he was asked to pass so much that he probably only averaged an interception for every 25 passes or so. Wasn't Bill Parcells the coach of the Patriots that season? I remember he called Bledsoe a high school QB in practice.   However, when I said Mallet reminds me of Bledsoe I meant Bledsoe in his last two years in Dallas.

Parcells was the coach. Now that I think of it, it might have been his rookie year rather than his second.  his rookie year they won a few games at the end of the year and, if I remember right, drafted Willie McGinest with the #4 pick and maybe Chris Slade in the second round.  The next year, they made the playoffs but lost to Belichek in the only Cleveland playoff year while BB was there.

I realize you meant Drew's last few years in Dallas, but I'm thinking Malett's career may have more arc to it.

So, it looks like teams have to re-sign their own players. What the h? Maybe the Redskins can get some dissatisified players?

Hey James... how can Goodell be a puppet and a dictator at the same time?

Those two words don't really seem to go well together.

happens all the time- pretty much every eastern block leader between the 1950s and the 1980s was a dictator and a puppet of the ussr at the same time. I would say it aptly describes all commissioners- they act like petty dictators, but serve at the owners whims

He's melting down right before our eyes and kissing his career as a Steeler goodbye. I would not be surprised at all to see the Rooney's cut ties with him. He's becoming a big distraction for them.

The UFL is dead. :jmad batsignal: :lmao:

Quote
Though today’s 12:00 p.m. ET press release from the UFL followed by a 2:00 p.m. ET conference call with Commissioner Michael Huyghue likely will serve the purpose of formally announcing a 30-day delay to the launch of training camp, one agent who represents players in the league privately has told us that, in his view, the UFL is dead.

The agent also passed along a copy of the memo from Sacramento Mountain Lions coach Dennis Green to his players on Monday regarding the situation.  The full text appears below.  (We converted it from all caps, since all caps is roughly the equivalent of screaming into someone’s eyeballs.)

“At 3:30 p.m. Pacific time today, the UFL league office has just informed us that the season has been delayed thirty (30) days.

“There has [sic] been significant funding issues, and the UFL and its teams cannot operate training camp at this time.

“Do not report to training camp.  Stay in your home city, and check and see if your ticket is changeable to a later date.  Sid will inform you as soon as possible as to when you can rebook.

“Regarding the regular season calendar and how the contract will work from here on out, Sid will let you know as soon as we hear more.

“This is a tough deal for everyone, including coaches and staff who are already here.  We have been informed to leave camp Tuesday 19 July so we appreciate your patience and cooperation.”

Last week, Huyghue told PFT that the league would move forward for the 2011 season, with the four owners shouldering an expected operating deficit of $40 million.  At a minimum, one or more of them have had second thoughts about what essentially could amount to throwing their money away.

I mean, at least they could do something more productive with all those 100-dollar bills, like light cigars with them.

It remains to be seen whether the UFL is indeed dead.  The goal could be to hold it all together long enough for the NFL to swoop in and buy it once the lockout ends, a possibility to which Huyghue alluded last week.

Damn...I really wanted to see me some used up, old ass, Daunte Culpepper play again.

I didn't even know that this league was still around. I thought it already folded.
