Why not call him up now? It's not like we're going anywhere.

Where are you going to play him?

Neither he or Desmond have played Second Base.

They should be giving him lots of playing time at second in Syracuse. That's were he'll probably end up playing.

If Espinosa is supposed to be the better of the two at SS, why would he be the one that is moved?

Because Desmond can throw the ball really hard and has already been anointed the SS of the future. :?

I thought of that after I posted. I guess Desmond should move to second and Espinosa stay at short. Management will have to figure that one out in September.

desmond showed promise today with the backhand, right now im leaning more into desmond at SS, this was his rookie year, im sure he will work on his errors next spring, and am also a big fan of espinosa, him and desmond tandem will be special to watch

You let them fight it out in the spring.  Whoever loses the job goes to 2B.  It's not that hard.  Neither is 2B.  They should be able to learn the position in about a month.  By the ASB, they'll be just fine.  Heck, Guzman did...sorta.

What if Espinosa gets called up when the rosters expand? Wouldn't the "fighting it out" start in September?

I thought I read that the team wasn't planning on bringing Espinosa up in September.

Maybe I was confused about that.

I don't know. If he does well in AAA, I'd consider calling him up in September, but that's just my opinion.

Unless he plays like total crap in AAA, I don't see any reason why not to call him up in September. We might as well get him integrated in to the big team now. We don't have anything to lose.

Kinda torn on this, but it's a good problem to have.  No matter what position they play, the bottom line is both will be out there.  My rankings for the guys:

Arm: Desmond (both are strong, but ID has more of a cannon)
Range: Tie (they both make some highlight reel catches, but need to cut down on the routine mistakes)
Power: Espinosa (in a stacked line-up he could be a 20-25 HR threat, where I think ID is a 15-20)
Average: Tie (I think ID will be a .280 hitter, Espinosa a .270)
Speed: Tie (20 SB potential)

I think Desmond is a #2 hitter where Espinosa could project to be a #6.

We actually have quite a bit to lose. This organization suffered greatly because Bowden was obsessed with bringing guys up that were hot in the minors way before they were ready. These guys are barely above being labeled kids. You put them up against major league pitching that they aren't ready for and can't hit, then most of them seem to lack the maturity to shake it off. They become convinced there's something wrong with their swing, become head cases, etc. Bringing up guys before they are ready can have a definitive detrimental effect on their future viability. Look at Martis as a recent example.

Leave Espinosa down for this year, send him to a fall league or winter ball, then have him in the major league camp in Spring. We certainly aren't playing for anything this year, there's no point to rush it.

An option year is something to lose.

Yeah, very good point.  I would be very surprised to see Espinosa up in September.

An option year is something to lose.

In addition to having to use a spot on the 40 man roster. They already have to add 4 or 5 prospects to the 40 man or risk losing them.

 I'm really looking forward to the prospect that we may have a starting middle infield of desmond/espinosa

Obviously it would be hurt by the move... but a 20/20 player would be a good fit anywhere.

Can't wait to see Desmond-Espinosa for the final month of the season.
