HRod will end up Storening himself in game 7 of the NLCS.

Well arn't you a rain of sunshine

Also for those of you who are trading bullpen arms, who do you want to close? (1-2 pitchers, I'd be interested in a closer by committee)

Hrod should never touch an important game... ever.

I just found out that I have an insider on Adam LaRoche!

Maybe I'll get the scoop and pass it along if something happens regarding him.    :eyebrows:

Definitely not.

Keep Storen then? Why do you need a "closer"? Why not just use the best pitcher for the situation that can handle that pressure?

Might be a baseball tradition I don't understand.

Morse plus Clippard to the Red Sox for Ellsbury?

Clippard has pitched a ton of innings over the past few years.  I don't think he's a good bet to continue to hold up.  His value is also relatively high right now.  To me, that makes him a good trade candidate.

I'd do that in a heartbeat, but I doubt they'll take so little for Ellsbury. Remember, Morse has one year left. He's essentially a rental. I also think Clippard would be a disaster in that ball park due to him being a fly ball pitcher.

Still, if they want Clippard, I'd go Moore, Goodwin, Clippard for Ellsbury.

The best pitcher for the situation is the closer.

It makes it easier to manage the game. You get your starter through 6 and the manager only has to worry about innings 7 & 8 for matchups. Then, bring in the sandman because the closer will take care of it.

Look how much shorter games were against the Braves. O'Flarety in the 8th and Kimbrel in the 9th made it a 7 inning game.

ellsbury is two years into arbitration with an $8 million base- not too different from Morse's situation

Makes sense, but obviously it can't be a hard rule. Bringing in Storen 3 days straight was questionable and didn't work out too well :| so you'd probably have to have some flexibility there.

But I'm not a Major League manager and I will never pretend to be  so gotta trust everyone else on this.

closer by committee always sounds good, and by the numbers, should work, but it never seems to

That'd be an interesting read/write up. Always things that look fantastic on paper but never work out.

Keep Storen. He'll be fine in the long run.

I think he will be. The only concern I have for him is whether he can get over the blown save or not.

I think he'll be fine. Thankfully he has people around him that can help him move past this. And hopefully he'll just come back with something to prove.

Just don't pitch him 3 days in a row again

I'm not too concerned about that. When he hears the standing ovation the home crowd will give him when he is introduced on Opening Day, crapting himself on the mound in game 5 will be a thing of the past. If he's such a mental midget that he can't get past it then we just need to move on and find someone else to close. We don't freaking have time to be coddling the weak minded. We have to win championships.  :whip:

Or he can just sack up and atone for it in next year's playoffs.

That was my thinking.  Ellsbury isn't too much more than a rental himself.  Red Sox don't have a 1B for next year and their bullpen was not very good last year.  Maybe we'd have to add something, but probably not one of our top 10 prospects.

They think very highly of JB Jr.  BA rated him 5th best prospect in the Eastern League after the season.  I don' tknow the ETA.  I would not think Goodwin is as advanced as JB Jr.

There is some speculation that Ellsbury could be moved, but I have not seen talk about what they are looking for in return.

Well, for Ellsbury there was some speculation about a deal with Texas centered on Holland.  I don't know what else was in it and who walked away.   Maybe a lesser pitcher and a prospect outside the organizations' top 10.  It does not sound like a lot. given his agent is Boras, I could imagine the Nats saying we can get a long term deal done, and it is just a question of the short term rental price.

In theory, if you added Ellsbury and brought back ALR, you could have a very balanced line up.
1 Ells (8 )
2 Werth (7)
3 Harper (9)
4 Zimmerman (5)
5 ALR(3)
6 Desmond (6)
7 Espi / Lombo (4)
8 Catcher (2)

If you think that is too aggressive with Harper, you can always go RRLL in 2- 5

or you could switch werth and ells.  Werth took off in the leadoff spot and I don't want to mess with his newfound mojo.

Maybe the Red Sox would want Corey Brown.  I think Brown is a decent player.  There just isn't any room for him on the Nats.  Red Sox may want a mulligan on the Reddick trade and Brown seems a similar type player and has several years of team control left.

Holland is a good pitcher though.  Not sure the Nats can compete with that offer short of trading Detwiler.
