Pretty good article on Trevor Bauer, definitely a unique fellow.

From Baseball America

Quote
Peter (San Diego): Danny Hultzen's early performance has to be vaulting him up draft boards... Is he maintaining his increased velocity? Is he a legit top-15 pick? Top 10?

Aaron Fitt: I think he's definitely a top 15 pick, and maybe a top 10 guy. I see a lot of similarities between him and Mike Minor, who went No. 7 overall. Both have advanced pitchability, great changeups, good breaking balls, spot their fastballs, excellent athleticism. Like Minor, I think Hultzen will move quickly in pro ball. He has maintained his velocity — a lot of scouting directors put him in the same discussion as Purke, Jed Bradley and Tyler Anderson as lefties with chances to go in the top 10.

I get putting him with Bradley and Anderson, but his stuff just is not as good as Matt Purke. Purke is with Rendon and Cole in a class by themselves in the draft. Jungmann, Gray, and Springer lead the second tier. I don't see how Hultzen is in the same breathe as Purke in terms of chances in the top 10. Purke is a lock. Hultzen has an outside to chance to crack it, my guess is he does not. I'd definitely take him over Anderson. We'll see about Bradley as the rest of the year goes on.

Purke took the loss last weekend against a team that was 0-14 heading into his start (Houston Baptist).

And?

I know Hultzen has some fans here, but I can't imagine even the biggest supporter would put him up there with Purke.

Hultzen goes 7 IP against #4 FSU but gets a no decision that the #5 Cavaliers eventually won in 13 innings

Hultzen's line - 7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 0BB, 12K

For the season, Hultzen is now 4-0, 1.05 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, 62/4 K/BB

He's making me a believer. He's dealing against the big boys as well.

Wow he's pretty awesome.

Here's some video -

I saw what looked like a nasty changeup.  The K/BB ratio looks a lot like Cliff Lee's.

or Andy Sonnanstine.

The fact he's a lefty makes Hultzen a very high floor pick, if not as high a ceiling as other top 10.

Sonnanstine is a RHP drafted in the 14th round who did not pitch in a major conference.

Well I've noted on here before that Cliff Lee is a similar sized left hander that throws probably about as hard as Hultzen.  Lee also gets a lot of strikeouts and walks very few.

I don't get how Hultzen wouldn't have a Cliff Lee-type ceiling if he keeps performing this way.

I had problems finding Lee's stats for his year at Arkansas (2000) and his time at JUCO.  Help?

Might have trouble finding the stats from that long ago.  NCAA baseball did not start keeping comprehensive stats that were accessible through the internet until 2003, though some individual colleges made them available on their own.  Best I could find was a short line for him at Arkansas, 4-3 with a 4.45 ERA and 77 Strikeouts in 65 innings.  At Meridan CC he had 283 Ks.

Take it FWIW:

For what it's worth - at this point in the calendar, not much - I've now heard twice that Arizona (picking 3rd) loves UVA LHP Danny Hultzen.

The above link is a nice writeup of recent performance.  George Springer - I want no part of.  He's another JMax type toolsy player, it sounds like, that may end up with strikeout issues.  I much prefer Jackie Bradley Jr if we're drafting an outfielder.

This link includes a quote from someone at Baseball Prospectus stating that he thinks Cole will be a better pitcher than Stras.

Sounds like Jackie Bradley is not going to be in the discussion to be a Nats draft pick. He's a "baseball player". Nats don't like that, they like athletes that are good beef. Production be damned.

Thanks for posting. Not high on Purke or Springer. Hultzen is growing on me and I still really like Trevor Bauer. If we were to go hitter I would go Jackie Bradley Jr.

As much as this post annoys me, it jives with my avatar. (Jibes?)

Yeah - if anything, the Nats want complete 'baseball players' and not one (or two or three) trick ponies anymore.

I'd want to take a close look at Bauer's workload before drafting him. 130 pitches in March is insane. Not sure if this is common at UCLA or not, but you need to consider wear and tear on an arm when selecting first round picks.

He's kind of a special case though. Some guys are just built to pitch deeper than others, and that's precisely what he tailors his unique workouts towards.

130 pitches is not safe, no matter your core fitness, mechanical efficiency, and genetic arm strength.

Nothing against Baeur's work ethic and workouts, which I find fascinating. It's just not safe.

But I'm curious about his totals for the entire season and throughout his career. Was this an isolated incident or is UCLA always this reckless? Injury seeds planted now will show up later. Buyers beware -- it's the Nats responsibility to look into workload no matter who they hope to draft.
