Yes. If he develops (and Zimmerman re-signs, that's not a certainty at this point, lol) you move him to another position or another team in a trade.

Would you skip him, only to watch Zimmerman skip town to be A-Rod's heir, while we have no heir apparent at 3B?

Too many uncertainties in baseball. Best player available.

That's the debate for the Pirates this year.  They just had Alvarez come up at 3B but many consider Rendon to be the best player in the draft.  Do they still go with him or do they take Purke/Cole if their scouts grade them out as being no more than a very minute notch below Rendon?

Using the old 20-80 grading scale, if you're Pittsburgh and you grade Rendon at say 78 while Purke comes in a 76 and Cole at 75, do you take one of the pitchers?  It's not a strict BPA pick but it's also not a strict position of need pick.

I watched Rendon for two or three games when I was a Rice student, and didn't think his defense at third was all that special. Of course, scouts all seem to say he's the best 3B defender in college ball, so maybe I'm just wrong. But he's a pretty big guy and might yet move.

Kevrock I'd draft the next Ryan Zimmerman if I could, too - especially if I knew the guys after him were much worse and had little chance of developing.  There's really no way to know, though, because best player available is usually pretty muddled.

If I have to choose between the next Ryan Zimmerman and the next Roy Halladay or Mark Teixeira, I'm probably not going to pick the next Zim b/c I've already got one.

With respect to the Pirates, can't Rendon just be moved somewhere?   I don't follow college ball very much and haven't seen him play, but his listed size is on the smaller side 3B.  Could he be moved to LF?

Good points, I see what you guys are saying.

New Mock Draft out today.  http://www.mymlbdraft.com/MLB-Mock-Draft-2011  They have us taking RHP Sonny Gray with the 6th pick, and RHP Alex Meyer 23rd overall. I don't like these two picks. If the draft played out this way, I'd rather have RHP Trevor Bauer and 1B Preston Tucker. And take the best pitcher available at 34.

If they seriously leave JBJ on the table like that, I won't be happy.

Okay either Jackie B or Trevor B. I'd be okay with one of the two. But I really want a pitcher with the 6th pick.

If only draft picks were tradeable. We could deal somebody + the No 23 pick for the No 7 pick and guarantee getting two guys we really want.

It seems like teams are putting a fairly high value on 1st rd picks now.  I don't recall that always being the case.  Seems to affect relievers with type A status more than anyone else, though they seemed to do pretty well this offseason, too.

I don't think draft picks should be tradeable, though.  Certain teams would just trade the Bryce Harpers available at the top to the Yankees for multiple lower picks.  And the Bryce Harpers would be able to make all kinds of demands about not wanting to sign with certain teams and try to force trades - mostly to the Yankees.

The positional issue doesnt really factor in with Pittsburgh. There are questiosn about Alvarez sticking at 3B long term before Rendon entered the picture. He'll just slide over to first.

As for us ... I like Bauer, but he's not worth the 6th pick. He simply doesnt have Lincecum's stuff, despite the frame and delivery. At 23 sure, not at 6.

I just think Bauer is better than Sonny Gray. My top 10 pitchers right now goes Gerrit Cole>Matt Purke>Taylor Jungmann>Trevor Bauer>Archie Bradley>Daniel Norris>Danny Hultzen>Dylan Bundy>Sonny Gray>Alex Meyer

I was thinking that very thing this morning...JBJ would solve a problem we've had since Soriano was here: a legitimate lead-off hitter.

Are we all on the same page that their initial first round pick is going to be from college?

Rizzo seems to lean college early

I've always been a fan of college picks early, high school picks later.

I think Rizzo feels the same way.

I agree - too much bust potential with high schoolers, even if the ceiling is marginally higher.

The only time I may be swayed is in the case of a Rick Porcello type guy who slides. If he is the top arm in the draft (or the 1A guy) and I'm selecting, I might be tempted

Well, yeah - if the top arm (or bat) slides several spots and is significantly better, I'd make exceptions in those cases.

But at that number 6 slot, I'd draft the number 2 or 3 arm rather than the top overall arm if the top pitcher is a high schooler.  I realize I may be passing up a potential ace for a probable #2/3, but I'm also decreasing the chances of getting an absolute bust.  I'd take that same arm at #23 and #34, though.

Didn't Porcello drop all the way down to the teens or twenties?

If I remember correctly, Porcello was pick 26 or 27.

Porcello dropped to a $7M signing bonus.

http://5tooltalk.com/2011-mockdraft-2-11-11.html

Latest mock draft here has us taking Bubba Starling - a high school OF/RHP, and Michael Kelly at 23 - another HS RHP.  The write up of Kelly on the same website lists, ironically enough given the above discussion, Porcello as a possible comp - http://www.5tooltalk.com/2011-dandydozen-11-14-10.html.  Bubba Starling has a football commitment to Nebraska.

I don't understand how these projections change when there hasn't been a single pro, college or high school game played in months.  And if we take Bubba, I think I'll cry...
