it's his first start.  results shouldn't matter as much as how he feels after and what not.

He was topping out at 91. When he was drafted the report was he threw in the mid nineties. Looks like he lost some velocity.

he was always going to be a gamble, but it's way to early to pass any judgement

Let's wait a month...say at least five more starts. By then Purke should be as strong as he will ever be. (And isn't is better than having him shelved with injury?)

From KG update today:

Quote
Matt Purke, LHP, Nationals (Low-A Hagerstown): 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 BB, K. Official pro debut; stuff was way off with 86-90 mph fastball and little command.

The 2011 "thrilling" draft not looking good at this moment. I realize there is a long time to go before these guys truly crap out, but...be nice to see something out of them before 2012 is over. Impatient, i guess.

Goodwin will take a lot longer to know, and while the two big gambles aren't looking good, you have to give it at least a couple more years

You cannot act like Strasburg and Harper are normal draft picks. They are considered by some two be the two best draft prospects in a generation (I'm holding back on hyperbole).

they are considered by pretty much everyone to be the two best draft prospects in a generation.  They are considered by some to be the best draft prospects ever.

Matt Skole has been very good and Goodwin and Meyer have both flashed promise.

Kylin Turnbull had a very good start in his last outing.

Even Caleb Ramsey has played well.

Taylor Hill has been decent.

Way too early to call the class a bust, even if Purke and Rendon haven't done anything yet.

I really hope Purke pans out. We need another bespectacled pitcher once Clip inevitable moves on to greener pastures.

Agree about Skole and Ramsey.  Still concerned about the top picks, though.  Will wait and see.

Numbers are nice -- but this is the really important question...

purke had 3 perfect innings yesterday before finishing with a final line of:

5.2 ip  3 hits  3 earned runs  4 walks  5 strikeouts  1 hit by pitch  2 wild pitches

considering how good he did through the first 3 innings i think the reason for the bad outing was that he simply does not have much stamina yet.
