Andy McGuire SS James Madison HS:  The local boy.  From Vienna, VA and regarded as one of the purest hitters in this years HS draft class.  Could develop decent power.  As he fills out he will probably have to move off SS to 3B or 2B
Good thing he isn't entering the draft as a pitcher, when I was a senior at South County in 2011 we rocked him and Madison 10-0 to move on to the regional championship. Of course, he's gonna get the last laugh as he'll get drafted, but I'll always have that RBI single off him

I saw Andy McGuiore play once and I really, really hope we draft him, he is going to be a great middle infielder one day and I'd kill to have him take Espinosa's place.

Draft is tomorrow night. It has lost a little luster for me because we don't have a first round pick but hopefully Rizzo and Co. have scouted well and can do well with the picks they do have.

What are you hoping they focus on?  Big league ready (or near ready) pitching candidates?

Pretty much best player available, preferably college player. We could use more (offensive) catchers, CFer, starting pitching.

Would be nice to get a good college starting pitcher prospect in the second round if there is one there. Catcher could be nice too, someone that can challenge Ramos within a year or two for the catcher job.

I'm staying positive and pretending a ton of college seniors means we make a big splash at 68.

Catchers & Closers. That's what we need.

Oh, and first round needs ot be the guy with the highest ceiling. Rizzo, don't go all freaktard on us and take a Drew Storen instead of Mike Trout.

Nats have the smallest signing pool this year, right?  There will several seniors selected in the first 10 rounds, me thinks.

answer to my own question.  Yes.  2.7 million pool.  Pick 68 is slotted at 820K.

If you want to give Rizzo credit as a great scout, this is the kind of draft where it should show since they can't just throw money at players

No first round pick this year.

Yeah, we have 1 pick in the top 100. Our second pick is #105.

Also, just your regular reminder that by the "didn't draft Mike Trout" criterion, almost every team in the MLB is run by freaktards.

Wow, check out Baseball America's 2005 mock draft. They nailed almost everything, to the point where I thought it had been edited afterwards.

(Also, notice the uncharacteristically massive mistake Tampa Bay's scouting team made in the '05 draft - the player they were considering but didn't take. Would have changed the course of baseball history these last 5 years.)

Yep. And it's not like Storen was that big of a reach - he had a first round grade. Plus, despite his meltdown in game 5, he's provided a ton of value.

Oddly enough, we got the guy who ended up going #14 in that draft (Purke).

Shelby Miller went #19. He's a stud.

And FWIW, Dustin Ackley went #2. Bet Mariners fans love that.

Yep, giving up our first round pick hurts more for the lost money for signings than it does for the actual loss of the pick.

I'm wondering if the Nats can pick up some signing money by trading for draft picks now that compensation picks can be transferred.  (Also wondering if the moves on Tuesday were made after unsuccessful player for pick trade offers.)

I created a custom leaderboard at FanGraphs of everybody drafted ahead of Mike Trout who's made the major leagues. These are their career WAR numbers:

Mike Trout.................13.7 WAR
Stephen Strasburg...9.0 WAR pitching, 0.3 WAR hitting = 9.3
Mike Minor.................4.8 WAR pitching, -0.5 WAR hitting = 4.3
Mike Leake................4.4 WAR pitching, 1.9 WAR hitting (!!) = 6.3
Dustin Ackley.............3.9 WAR
Shelby Miller..............2.4 WAR
Drew Storen..............2.3 WAR
A.J. Pollock.................1.6 WAR
Aaron Crow...............1.2 WAR
Alex White................ -0.4 WAR

Of the guys ranked ahead of Drew Storen, only Trout and Shelby Miller were available when we picked Storen. It would be damn nice to have Shelby Miller too, but hey, that's how the draft shakes out. But there's something more important. Slateman, if you think we were dumb for choosing Storen over Trout, shouldn't you also think we were dumb for drafting Strasburg?

not if the reason you think it was dumb is that Storen is a reliever Every year, the rest of the guys on that list will likely be gaining on storen (his 2.3 WAR is as a full time player with almost no time in the minors- most players drafted spend far more time there, and you can argue that Storen has already peaked)

Different argument altogether.

Regardless, I personally think Drew will close again during his career and is far from having peaked. May not be in DC, but it will be somewhere.

how is that a different argument? Even if Storen has a great career for a reliever (top 50 all time), he's likely to end up with a cumulative WAR of less than 15 (15 would actually put him as the 25th best reliever ever)- there just isn't nearly as much value in relievers as other positions

I meant in relation to what Slateman is upset about.

He's mad we took anyone over Trout at 10.
