2012 media power rankings
« Topic Start: February 01, 2012, 07:07:19 PM »
SI's Joe Lemire just issued the first SI power rankings of the year. Braves #10, Nationals #12, Marlins #14.

It's a pretty fair write-up:

Quote
A full season of Stephen Strasburg, at least half a season of Bryce Harper and a has-to-be-better-season from Jayson Werth -- not to mention the addition of starter Gio Gonzalez -- should have the Nationals playing meaningful games in September (especially if the second wild card is implemented). Washington needs better all-around play at shortstop and could stand to add a true centerfielder, but once Werth, Harper and Michael Morse are all there it should have an outfield that can mash.

...although he clearly hasn't thought too hard about what a Werth Harper Morse outfield would be like defensively.

ESPN Insider (JimBo, KLaw, Buster) has "Future Power Rankings," where they rank the MLB teams on how good they will be for the next 5 years.

Anybody want to tell us where the Nationals rank?

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story?id=7574220&_slug_=mlb-future-power-rankings-2012-nos-20-11&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fmlb%2fstory%3fid%3d7574220%26_slug_%3dmlb-future-power-rankings-2012-nos-20-11

My naive guess is in the range of 6-8.

They ranked us #14.

Said a lot of our potential success relies on Strasburg staying healthy/Harper reaching his potential(obviously we knew that).  Olney said of all the teams outside of the top 10, we have the greatest chance to be top 5 in these rankings a year from now.

They also said we need to start grooming a manager to replace Davey, whether it's someone established like Francona or an unknown up and comer.  Said it's crucial we get someone that can earn the respect of Stras/Harper and get the most out of their potential.

I'm thinking they go with Randy Knoor - he's done a great job in the minors

Is it any surprise that 4 of the top 10 are in the AL East? Plus Philly, Texas, LAA, Atlanta, Arizona and St. Louis. Hmmm...all teams that are good right now. Other than the Tigers, there isn't much deviation from the current power rankings. Once again, ESPN produces a list without much thought behind it.

Haha they actually mentioned him in the passage about us needing to groom a new manager after Davey.

Tigers have a lot of huge contracts that could really be a problem for them down the line

:)

His name has otherwise been bandied around quite a bit by the locals

I read a really good article about the long term implications of their current contracts. It was really interesting. I'll see if I can find it.

We will be better than the Braves, we are now about level with pitching, and i think our (still mediocre hitting) is better than theirs.

i'm excited and optiimistic about the upcoming season, but as for what we will do, i have no idea.

so many question marks.

Was Morse's first full season as a starter a fluke?
can La Roche be even an average first baseman?
will Harper play and be productive? or will it be a lot of learning on the job and glimpses of hope?
Can werth improve his BA to around .265 and hit for power and take walks rather than striking out a zillion times?
Is Desmond the player we saw in the last 6 weeks hitting leadoff? or is he the below average SS who hit around .225  for most of the season with no power or walks.
This is before we discuss the pitching.

Nothing to comment on on the Nats, since it's A. A reasonable ranking and B. As they admit, is totally up in the air and dependent on basically two key players seasons this year to set the tone for the next five plus.

But... Hahahaha to the Orioles ranking 30. Dead freaking last. Hahah. Hilarious. Just goes to show what a freaked up joke that organization has become that they can be ranked worse than even the Pirates or Royals, or similar do nothing, budgets of nil to none, perineal loser teams. It truly warms my heart to think and see others anticipating that the Orioles future looks even worse than what they've endured thus far, and are a team headed nowhere except losersville. Couldn't happen to a nicer owner, and partial fan-base, who stopped my city from having a team during my childhood, and thus left me and so many others to grow up without MLB. Karma is truly a nag, ain't it, Petey? Of course, it's Angelos' unwillingness to spend or do anything that caused that ranking, so I guess if being such a national joke bothered him, the team wouldn't be where it is, and thus he likely could care less the O's are perceived as having the worst future out of all 30 MLB teams.

Our pitching is better. Hanson is hurt, Hudson and Jurrens are good, Beachy is ok, who is there 4th starter? I'd definitely take Strasburg, Zimm-nn, Gio and Jackson over their top 4. The bullpens are comparable.

Our offenses are similar -- a lot of "ifs" if Uggla/Werth rebound; If Freeman/Espinosa/Ramos develop farther. McCann is one of the best, Zimmerman is our McCann, Ramos could be. Both teams need better production from Short. Will Chipper be good for one more year?
