Ayala is 31 years old and had an ugly 5.71 ERA last season, but posted marks of 2.92, 2.69, 2.66 and 3.19 during his previous four seasons. Still, it's odd that the Twins would pass on the many qualify middle relievers who have signed cheaply this offseason and then show interest in Ayala. Prior to last season's struggles his secondary numbers never matched his shiny ERAs, but Ayala is also better than he looked last year.

Oh how the mighty have fallen . . . to go from being the Nats' "Face of the Franchise" to a minor league contract with the Sox.  Then again, maybe that's not so far to fall  :?  There were nights when I thought the P-Nats were better, and played with more heart, than our big boys.  Sigh.

I was going to say that there are many out there who consider the guy who washes the jockstraps at Fenway to have a more noble station in baseball than anyone currently on the Nationals...not a belief I share, but we will be seeing plenty of those people in June, if not before (like puking out of cabs on St. Patricks Day)

That would leave three jobs open for Chris Dickerson, Jonny Gomes, Ward, Jacque Jones, Norris Hopper, Wilkin Castillo and Laynce Nix. Ward would seem to have a pretty good chance of securing a spot as a pinch-hitter unless Gonzalez's status forces the team to carry an extra infielder.

The Marlins played Bonifacio today at 3B which is mind boggling to me, because he has never played the position in his career and I always saw his strengths as his speed/range and defense in the middle of the field.  I guess they are him out to see if he can play the position, as he will probably be a utility IF for them, a role that he is well suited for.  Oh, and he went 0-2 with a SO.
