PHOENIX -- The D-backs continue to talk with the Yankees about a deal involving Randy Johnson, but plenty of details remain to be worked out -- both with the financial aspects as well as the players involved, a source with knowledge of the negotiations said.
The Yankees are interested in Arizona's young pitchers, particularly starters Micah Owings, Russ Ohlendorf and Dustin Nippert, along with relievers Brandon Medders and Luis Vizcaino. According to the source, the D-backs would have to part with two or three members of that group depending on whether the Yankees agree to pay some of Johnson's $16 million salary for 2007.

General parameters of which players would be involved have been set, but the two teams have not agreed yet on specific players. With a surplus of starters, the Yankees are looking to use Johnson to acquire young pitching talent.

The D-backs might feel comfortable parting with Vizcaino rather than one of their younger pitchers, which would seem to make sense despite the fact that Vizcaino was arguably the club's most valuable reliever in 2006, when he went 4-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 70 games.

That's because the 32-year-old is set for a raise from the $1.7 million he made last year, and he is one year away from becoming a free agent.

Johnson expressd a desire to pitch closer to home when Yankees GM Brian Cashman called him to convey his condolences on the passing of Johnson's brother.

The desert seems a logical destination for Johnson, given that he and his family live in the Phoenix area and he had some of the best years of his career with the D-backs, including a 2001 World Series victory over the Yankees.

Arizona would like to restructure Johnson's current contract, which expires after next season, extending it by a year. That would not only make the financial end more palatable to the club, but would also allow the future Hall of Famer to have a chance to pick up his 300th victory in an Arizona uniform. Johnson, who has won 17 games in each of the past two seasons for the Yankees, has 280 wins.

The two teams have not reached an agreement, so the D-backs have not been given a 72-hour window to negotiate with Johnson's camp about finances or waiving his no-trade clause. A source said Tuesday the D-backs have not had any contact with Johnson.

Owings, Ohlendorf and Nippert are among a group of seven pitchers that the D-backs expect to compete this spring for the final two spots in their rotation. Medders is a hard-throwing right-hander who was 4-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 27 games in 2005. He slipped to 5-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 2006.

I think Randy is meant to be a Diamondback.  You gotta think that Johnson is completely backing this trade :)

If the D-Backs make this trade, not only would the look dumb in their Nat-Clone uniforms, they would be dumb too.

Lose young pitching to the Yanks for Old Man Redneck?  Cripes, what a fleecing.

It might be worth the Yankees agreeing to eat about $6-7 million of Johnson's 2007 salary simply to get rid of him.

Cashman doesn't half pick 'em...Johnson in NY has only been marginally less of a money-down-the-toilet disaster than Kevin Brown was.

How the hell Cashman has kept his job, well you tell me?! Steinbrenner is such a wussy-cat and a soft touch these days that it's virtually impossible to get fired from that club, as Torre keeps finding out after every post-season choke.

Personally, if I was every other MLB team, I wouldn't deal anything to the Yanks.  They are perfectly fine where they are now:  drowning in their own arrogance and juices.  Keep them down, keep them old.

There's another angle to the salary thing.  The players the Yanks are getting, are below market since they are pre-arbitration or free-agency.  Johnson's probably close to above market.  So it would be unfair to the D-Backs to do a straight trade, without a salary adjustment.  I actually like some of Cashman's moves this season.  The Yankees (unfortunately) have been successful in getting some good prospects, to replenesh their gutted farm system.

Maybe back when the Stegasaurus roamed.  I have a feeling that old fossil is dried up and depending on his past and legend to scare batters.

I felt him breaking last season.  I think this season is the end of him.

NEW YORK -- The Yankees are close to accommodating Randy Johnson's desire to pitch closer to home, tentatively agreeing Thursday to a five-player trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The teams have informed the Commissioner's Office of the specifics of the trade. A Yankees spokesman said they had no comment at this time, but the D-backs issued a statement on Thursday evening.

"Earlier today we came to an agreement in principle with the New York Yankees regarding Randy Johnson," said Arizona senior vice president and general manager Josh Byrnes in a statement. "We have now been granted a 72-hour window from Major League Baseball to discuss Randy's contract status with his representatives, Barry Meister and Alan Nero. We will respectfully decline any comment during the negotiating window but will do so when there is news to announce."

Multiple reports identified a package of four Diamondbacks players who would be sent to the Yankees in exchange for the 43-year-old Johnson, who won 34 games over the past two seasons with New York. Johnson, coming off back surgery performed in October, is owed $16 million for the 2007 season.

Headed to the Yankees -- contingent upon Johnson waiving a no-trade clause in exchange for a 2008 contract extension -- would be reliever Luis Vizcaino, Minor League pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, plus Minor League shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.

The package would accomplish the Yankees' goal of replinishing their farm system with younger talent, much of it close to being ready for service at the Major League level.

A series of negotiations gained steam after Johnson, who lives in the Phoenix suburb of Paradise Valley, Ariz., noted his desire to be closer to his home and family in a telephone call with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Johnson pitched in Arizona from 1999 to 2004, including the D-backs' 2001 World Series victory over the Yankees. With New York, Johnson posted a record of 34-19, bringing his career total to 280 victories, but he was 0-1 with a 6.92 ERA in three postseason starts.

Vizcaino, 32, was a valuable reliever in Arizona's 2006 campaign. The right-hander was 4-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 70 games for the Diamondbacks, walking 29 and striking out 72 while scattering 51 hits in 65 1/3 innings. He has also played for the A's, Brewers and White Sox in eight seasons.

Ohlendorf, 25, was one of Arizona's more highly regarded pitching prospects and had been considered a contender for the team's starting rotation in 2007. Ohlendorf made 27 starts at Double-A Tennessee of the Southern League last year, going 10-8 with a 3.29 ERA. In 177 2/3 innings, Ohlendorf struck out 125 and walked 29.

Jackson, one of Ohlendorf's Double-A rotation mates, is a 24-year-old right-hander who went 8-11 with a 2.65 ERA in 24 starts, walking 45 and striking out 125. Jackson struggled while representing the Diamondbacks in the Arizona Fall League, going 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA in six starts for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

Gonzalez, 23, was Tennessee's starting shortstop in 2006 and is reputed to be a strong defensive player. He held his own against Southern League pitching, batting .290 with six home runs and 50 RBIs in 129 games.

Without Johnson, the Yankees' projected rotation heading into Spring Training would be comprised of Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Kei Igawa and Carl Pavano.

I've gotta say, why give up all those great young arms and bats for one great pitcher, but who will probably only pitch for one more good year.  The Yanks, for once, made a good deal.
