i really have to wonder if what is keeping us from getting the game is the area around the ballpark.  Until they develop the gas station across the street, and the bullpen area across from the CF gate, it would still be an embarrassment to D.C. to have the game here.

People could come and see the shipping crates, The Hole and dirt parking lots. I guess without the concrete plant there won't be much for the kids

I haven't rode by there in a while, but the last time I was there it looked just as empty and disappointing as it did after the NLDS.

Considering there is very little major construction going on around the stadium, it's doubtful we get one before 2020.

Zuck nails it:

Quote
The Nationals have been interested in hosting the All-Star Game since Nationals Park opened in 2008, but MLB officials have expressed concern all along about the slow development of the area around the ballpark. Though a few establishments are expected to begin opening in the next two years, those officials may want to see concrete evidence of the development before committing the game to D.C.

Earliest reasonable shot for us now is 2017, but Zuck says the Orioles are trying to get the 2016 game, so 2019 might be more reasonable for us.

DC doesn't develop a two block neighborhood, so they go to a crap hole like Cinci instead?

There's always The Bronx  ....  that's a sweet location.

the area around the stadium is still an eyesore, with no concrete plans for any development.  Not the scene the MLB wants for its showcase game.

Another reason they may have gotten it (similar to the Mets getting this year's): long wait since their last one - they last hosted it in 1988, and Great American Bandbox hasn't hosted it yet (the 1988 one was at Riverfront/Cinergy)....all the same, still a bit surprising given all the Pete Rose discussion/campaigning it's going to re-open, a topic which many of the Lords of Baseball seem to want to avoid (not that I'm advocating it - I'm not - but maybe Selig is going to amnesty him before the match?).

True (and add Dodger Stadium - last ASG 1980 - and there may be other examples) but the Lords of Baseball seem to be paying their debts of this sort in what they deem to be an orderly fashion (along with concerns noted earlier about the status of development in the Nats Park neighbourhood).

Dodger Stadium is also undergoing major renovations, not to mention the rehaul planned for Wrigley.  I'd imagine that the Nationals will have to wait until 2023 given those two teams, along with long ignored Petco Park.

I want the All-Star game here but we definitely need to build up the area first. We have zero bars around the field. There are a few hotels but the rest of the stuff around the field is just office buildings and expensive apartments.

There needs to be some attractions around the field rather than a mess. Man, if the area around the field was built up, that'd be an area to hang out even if the Nats weren't playing. I think it'd be so cool to have a "Nats" bar across from the field. That would be the place to go after home games or if they were playing on the road. I know I would go since the metro is right there.

I don't think Bud counts 1969.   He probably starts with 2005.

remember, you can't spell Superfund without Super Fun!

As for concrete evidence, how much more concrete can you have than a whole plant?

PNC actually sits near the site of an old farmer's market.    Don't ask me how I know that.  :)   The original Pittsburgh "ballpark" (Exposition Park) was located near present day PNC as well.   Most of the "toxic" sites are on the Mon and Ohio Rivers and further upstream on the Allegheny.

Every ASG gets several clubs competing for the rights, and the AngelO's would no doubt be one of the teams in the mix (last ASG 1993 - only one at Preparation H Park thus far) but I wouldn't regard them as a slam dunk at this point. Two AL clubs have gone longer without an ASG - Oakland (1987) and Toronto (1991) - along with Tampa Bay which has yet to host one. The A's won't get 2016 unless their new San Jose ballpark is certain of opening by then, so right now I'd have to say Tampa and Toronto make up the 2016 short-list...unless by the time they get round to awarding the 2016 ASG the Nats' telly-rights situation gets resolved in a way significantly unfavourable to Angelos, in which case Selig might just toss the old ambulance chaser the 2016 ASG as a consolation prize. Besides, everyone thinks PHPACY is such a beautiful ballpark (or so the story goes) and it's so sad it's gone over 20 years without an ASG....

Not that that makes it right compared to when Nats Park gets its first ASG (it of course doesn't), but I could see things working out as described above.

they alternate NL/AL every year, so Baltimore could possibly get it in 2016, which means we probably wouldn't get it in 2017 (too close to Baltimore).
