Never understood why people are happy to see Dunn fail.

By people do you mean Blathering Blatherscyte and sportsnyan?  Cuz I seriously can't think of anyone else (at least among Nats fans) who is actually happy about the season he's had.

Dunn was my favorite player on the team last year  I just think that Morse was the right choice and LaRoche was the abysmal choice.

Ideally he comes back to form after the White Sux cut him loose and are still on the hook for his salary.

Tristian Cockcroft looks at Dunn's season, noting that with a minimum of 450 PAs, Dunn put up the worst batting average in the history of baseball.  He claims the Rob Deer comparison isn't fair to Deer as Deer not only hit 20 points higher (.179) but hit 25 HRs versus 11 for Dunn.  By Dunn not qualifying for enough PAs for season batting records, he missed setting a new season record for highest strikeout percentage in history (42.7).

Quote
As difficult as it is to imagine Dunn declining so quickly at the age of 31, there wasn't a lot in his peripheral numbers to argue a turnaround is coming in 2012. He completely collapsed against fastballs: After managing .304/.399/.638 and .314/.400/.666 rates against them the past two seasons, he slipped to .160/.327/.274 with a 38.7 percent K rate against them in 2011. He was utterly anemic against lefties, batting .064/.235/.074 with 39 K's in 94 at-bats. And he got even worse down the stretch, batting .143/274/.200 with 43 K's in 105 at-bats (41.0 percent) in 32 games after Aug. 1.

imref - I agree with out that that's pretty crazy.  He goes from a better-than-solid producer at the plate to one of the few in the running for the worst hitter in baseball history?  That's a precipitous drop and pretty shocking.  I can't imagine he'll be this bad next year.  If he is, I think he'd just retire rather than go through this type of season again.

Also Tristan Cockcroft is a funny name.

It's entirely possible the negativity of Ozzie just got to him.

I think #21 and #18 in wOBA in 2010 and 2009, respectively would merit more than "better than solid".

To you and imref's point - it does seem inconceivable that somebody could fall that far that fast.  For his sake I sure hope he turns it around next year.  It's kind of tragic that one of his most remarkable traits - his year-to-year consistency - goes completely in the crapter as soon as he finally gets his "big" contract.

It's probably unprecedented.  Are there records kept for something like 'largest ever one year drop in wOBA?' - just using your stat.  I would imagine most large one year drops are due to injury.  Dunn's case is just crazy.

I only picked wOBA because I thought you were a fangraphs guy.  Granted, I don't mind wOBA so much, but I'm sure OPS would've worked there too.

He actually comes out looking even better there...   #10 in OPS for 2009-2010 combined.

Any way you slice it, it's probably among the largest one season drops in history.  I don't think it's piling on talk about it - it's just a historic feat, even if it is a 'bad' one.  If someone went the opposite direction, that would also be worth talking about - especially if it was a former National.

I didn't say it was piling on, though there are definitely certain personalities outside of this board who do that.

Do you think not playing every day and being a DH had anything to do with it?

He always insisted he wanted to play the field, but no NL teams were offering what the white sox were - I'm surprised they didn't try him at 1b and Konerko at dh

I think they did platoon him with Konerko at 1st base and DH.  But as a Platoon, you don't get consistent playing time.  He's always said if he plays the field, it helps him keep his head in the game!

His OzzNeg of -400 was off the charts.

1. My White Sox friend blames Ozzie entirely for Dunn's decline.

2. How many PAs did he miss qualifying by?
