I'd rather have neither at those type of prices.

Yeah for the Phillies, I was thinking for the Nats, just thinking what I would have. Like I wouldn't have Madson or Pappy for that much. Brain not work today.

People (Pete Abraham) speculated that if the 4/$44MM were true for Madsen, then Paps would get 4/$56MM.  Since the Madsen deal fell apart, it figures Paps gets less.  Papelbon always said he was going to got o FA and seek a multi-year deal for something close to but less than Mariano.  You may call BS, but he has always had a sense of history and wanted to advance the position of closer in baseball.  He sees himself as Mariano's heir. Not necessarily as good a Mariano, but definitely the one who would be the top closer when Mo took a step back.

There's no way the Sox would ever lock in a closer for this kind of money, especially with Bard on the roster.  It does blow a hole in their bullpen, which means they may play for Nathan or some of the other closer set up guy candidates. They also have that fat slob Bobby Jenks on the roster, so perhaps they can get good gas (fastball) rather than the gas got last year (flatulence).

Sox may try for Madsen, but no more than 3/$30 MM.

I'm hoping Rizzo feels the same way.

Frees up a RP to be traded... but that's about it.

Quality depth at a position that it can be difficult to find.  That's at least 3 guys who have no problem taking the ball in the 8th or 9th inning.  Not many teams can say that.  Though this was his first year closing successfully, he's been good in that setup role for a while now.  Also insurance in case something does happen to Drew or Clipp, assuming one isn't moved in a subsequent deal, which might be likely.  Takes some pressure off your rotation and should help protect against wearing out your back end guys.  Assuming they don't go to Philly levels of price, I think it's a move that I'd make.

Price and salary and salary efficency is the issue with Madson, I do not think anyone is saying he is a crappy pitcher. Also there is that pesky Type A thing.

Yeah... I don't think I could ever bring myself to giving up a 1st round pick for a RP, regardless of who it is.

The phillies end up gaining a pick by signing paps instead of resigning Madsen

That's true, that makes it tougher to pursue.  I guess it depends on what else they do, because, I think they feel they're pretty close and that could be a devastating bullpen for the next couple of years, especially if Mattheus, Bally and Rodriguez continue to progress.  It might also be an indication of how Davey wants to manage this team, whether or not they go and get him.

I could very easily see Paps and Madsen switching teams.  Each team would gain a pick, and it frees them up to sign another Type A and only give a second rounder.  Hypothetically, if another team signs Ortiz, the Red Sox would have 2 supplementals plus the Phillies #1 and the #1/#2 of the team signing Ortiz.  They could sign Madsen and another Type A and end up with 2 1sts and 2 supplementals while only giving up their own 1st and 2d.

From a Nats perspective, Boston may become a trade partner.  A middle reliever for Reddick, or something like that.

Would Reddick be competent in CF?

He played a lot of CF in AA and AAA, he's a good athlete, I'm sure he could. I wonder if his OBP is good enough for Rizzo. I mean he's only 24. Should get much better, he has some developing power and his approach at the plate is improving.

Hear papelbon deal is $50M for 4 yrs w/ vesting option for 5th that could make it worth $60M.

Papelbon deal is $50M guaranteed for 4. Hear the 5th-yr vest is "easy" too.

I am surprised they didn't spend more but it is still a stiff price.

Just ordered my new Miami Marlins hat.  The uniforms are much nicer than I thought they'd be.  Loria is a scumbag but they're going to be hot this season.

What happens if a team can't make payroll? Say  Loria gets his grab bag of stars- Reyes, Pujols, Cepedes... And baseball still flops in Miami- none of the contracts will be tradable and they'll all be long term (here's hopIng that bridge gets crossed)

I heard one report that the Marlins were offering Reyes a 3 year deal with massive AV.  Can't remember where, but it was a day or two ago - prior to the Rosenthal tweet.

Marlins also in talks with Mark Buehrle, who is also certain to be overpaid somewhere this offseason.
