And there're cases too. College students should always have cases on their phone. At least, my two college students should.

Ok, got my Droid Razr M... I love it. It's actually smaller than my Droid X despite having the same screen size, making it really compact. The screen itself is just dazzling, very bright and great definition. The microphone/connection seems to be much better, as the people I've called can hear quite a difference.

It was annoying to install the sim card, however, and activating the phone was difficult. I don't control the account, and I didn't have the billing code or other information needed to activate the phone. When I called Verizon (twice, first told me I needed the code, second time when I had obtained it) they were very kind concerning my problems, so that made me happy. However actually CONNECTING with customer service was hard, I could not call them directly (busy signal) but I was able to get to them by calling the local Verizon store and going through them.

Also, we accidentally ordered the wrong color. I wanted to exchange the white phone I got for a black one. However they wanted a $35 restocking fee at my local store, which I refused. The employee looked bummed that he couldn't help me, but I'm not going to pay that much to exchange a $50 phone. The white looks fine, it'll grow on me.

Blah, battery life on my LTE Galaxy Nexus is so uninspired.  I'm at 10% after 10 hours with 140m screen-on time (71% of usage)

And that's with the extended battery :?

Have you tried turning off LTE?  Apparently the 4G LTE is a killer of battery life, but then why have a 4G phone and use 3G speeds

But yeah, it sucks.  Though I will say that I'm getting better battery life with AOKP and Franco's kernel than I did with CM10.1 and Franco's kernel.  Plus it seems way snappier than CM10.1 was.

So, Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD 8.1 for Father's Day? Love the Kindle screen and the HDMI out, but I'm having a hard time being fenced into their ecosystem and fork of the code.

The positive side about buying Kindle is that Amazon has fantastic customer service, but the idea that I would use customer service precludes rooting it. I've heard lots of tough-luck stories about the Nexus 7, but it's hard to tell how true those stories are.

I also don't think the processors in the Kindle are as strong as those in the Nexus 7.

But that Kindle screen.

On the other hand, all the apps I have on my phone are available for the Kindle.

If you have paid apps on your phone you can transfer them to the Nexus via your Google Play account without having to buy them again.

You can side load google play onto the kindle and do the same thing

I've been very happy with my N7, but I tend to prefer reference devices anyway.

In that case, how is the Kindle fenced in?

You have to fiddle a little (nothing like jail braking an iphone) to get it on,  its not straightforward,  but that qualifies as fenced

I just wish Androids had better battery life in general, but I may be biased by my heavy usage and LTE

Reviews say that it's a better performing device.

I should just stop worrying about it, buy one, and realize that there will be times when I want the other.

I've been very happy with my N7, but I tend to prefer reference devices anyway.

You can install the amazon app store on any android device, and it includes the free app a day functionality.

www.amazon.com/getappstore

If you plan on using amazon prime streaming, or any amazon vod, you can only do that on a kindle.  Everything else is doable on the N7, but with a much more open system making it easier to do things such as change your internet browser.

Its all what you prefer,  i like the amazon skin for media consumption,  beyond easy to see your libraries,  i like samsungs skin on a phone (i would like stock android,  but i love samsungs calendar widget and haven't found any other calendar app that as good)
