Actually, I don't like Appelman's response. What he should have said first is that 2/3 of a season of UZR data only tells you something about a guy's UZR score for the period and does not indicate the player's true defensive talent. You need more for the sample size to be meaningful. I did not check the comments on the post. Did MGL chime in on this?
In any event, what was good about the post is that he did look at multiple years, and, surprise, they actually support what Kepner observed. So instead of ranting about "who do you believe, the numbers or your eyes,"
Boswell Kepner could have written something about "see how advanced stats can express what you observe in a way that allows comparison across the game even when players do not go head to head." Far more interesting than his whine, half thought out, rote peeing and moaning.
