Bosh was in the same position. He could've gone anywhere he wanted.

The point still stands - the Heat would have signed 2-3 good-great-elite players that summer, or have traded for Deron/Howard/CP3/someone because they had the assets (picks, expiring contracts, cap space) to make it happen.

And thrres probably 7-10 teams this year who have a real shot to make the Finals. Many of those teams are not in big markets. No coincidence they have the best management.

Well, I did say clear cap and sign FA OR draft well, didn't I?  :mg:

And San An has done a good job of attracting the right free agents there, plus keeping their own.

when the wizards landed their number 1s, what super start should they have drafted to cement a dynasty?

 Come on man, they passed on Tyson Chandler and Pau Gasol to draft Kwame Brown.

Then they take John Wall, put him alongside a failed coach, and surround him with a newly extended Andray Blatche, Gilbert Arernas and Javale McGee? Really?

And literally every pick from 7-17, between the two Wiz picks, is anywhere from slightly to significantly more useful than Jan Freaking Vesely.

What if they would have gone with Wall, drafted Klay Thompson, where there was a real need too (SG) and then drafted Thomas Robinson this year? Or had kept the Foye pick, drafted Rubio, then drafted Demarcus Cousins in 2010, and whoever fell to them in 2011? How much better would that team be?

Gasol and Chandler aren't center pieces, if you want to give GMs credit for drafting, what superstars did they pass on? At most they whiffed on the opportunity to get bounced in the first round. If the formula is to build around superstars, what super stars have they passed on?

Gasol was absolutely a superstar in his prime, if not still a top 25 player.

They, IMO, had one in Arenas, but they doubled down on an aging, injury prone core that cost them the chance to get valuable players in 2010.

And simply by drafting better, or at least not trading top 5 picks and sticking to the draft board, they would have a team significantly better than whatever it is that they're trotting out now.

Gasol did nothing until he got to LA

Does Leonsis refuse to fire the Caps GM too? Does that guy at least do a good job?

Yeah they definitely made a great call on getting LeBron and Bosh. I'm just arguing that NBA is so predictable because there isn't any parity. There are Amazing teams (the top 4 seeds in both conferences), the just made it teams (the 5-8 seeds that probably won't go anywhere), and then the rest (the teams that suck year after year).

The Capitals, in McPhee's first season (1997-98) went to the Cup Final with a roster mostly inherited from David Poile...they have not gotten past the second round since.

The Wizards have won one playoff series (2005, over Bulls, on Grunfeld's watch) in the past thirty years.

The Mystics have won one playoff series in their entire 15-season history (2002, over now-defunct Sting, three years before Leonsis bought team).

Verizon (former MCI) Centre, opened 1997, has never been the home arena of a championship team.

MONUMENTAL!

Well that's still alot more teams in the hunt than say, the NFL and MLB, no? How many different NFL teams have won it all lately? If the Dolphins somehow made the playoffs, woldn't I be silly for thinking they could win it all?

If you want to make that argument, aren't the MLS and NHL the only true parity leagues right now?

no, actually its not, and if you look at the recent histories of the leagues, it's the same teams always wining in the NBA

47% of NBA teams won't agree with me anyway, they're dependent on the system, and think they're victims. The Heat don't have to worry about those people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NBA_champions - there is some credibility to that; since the MJ/Bulls dynasty's final win in 1998 only six different teams (Celtics, Heat, Lakers, Mavericks, Pistons, Spurs) have won the title.

And two of those teams aren't from big markets, and one of them didn't even have a star.

Can't believe I forgot about Detroit, would've enhanced my argument  8) Maybe because I block those douches out in my mind.

looking back 20 years

12 MLB champions (out of 19 years because of the strike)
13 in the NFL
8 in the NBA

The Heat don't have to worry because they're a prime example of why the system in the NBA is silly.

And no, that isn't a lot more teams in the hunt than the NFL or any other sport. The NBA just allows 16 teams in the playoffs. they would be fine with 8 since the other 8 don't really matter.

NFL and MLB have much more teams in the hunt year round that could actually do some damage. That's why the MLB added another wild card round. Look at how close it was this year. The NFL could easily do the same, but they already have two wild cards in place and have the two best teams have a bye.

I've never seen a league that was so easy to guess the playoffs.

It doesn't even matter if the Wizards made every right decision.  They might have won 30 games.  Or 40.  Or 50.  Still wouldn't compete with the handful of teams that have all the benefits of being in a great city or have lucked into a Kevin Durant or Tim Duncan.

With the max salary system, the best players can pick the nicest cities to live in since the not-so-nice cities can't pay them any more.  It's a broken system.  There are 5 Globetrotter teams and 25 Washington Generals teams.

And Washington clearly fits in to the nicest cities part, so something must be wrong here.

Even if it does, the system is still broken.
