Gameday Thread: Nats vs. Astros, Game 3
« Topic Start: July 23, 2005, 07:25:54 PM »

Brandon Backe, RHP (8-6, 4.87)
Astros (50-46)

Tony Armas, RHP (4-4, 4.96)
Nationals (54-43)

Game Time 7:05 PM

MLB Scouting Report:
Backe won his last start in Pittsburgh, holding the Bucs to one run depsite walking six. The right-hander has had mixed results this season but has logged at least six innings in five of his last eight outings. Backe is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in three starts in July.

Armas left Monday's game against the Rockies because of dizziness and dehydration. He was affected by the heat at RFK Stadium -- the gametime temperature was 87 degrees, but it was very humid. In his start before that, against the Mets, Armas threw seven two-run frames and did not factor in the decision as the Nationals lost, 3-2, in 11 innings.

I had a theory before this game began that we would win today.  Why?  The weather is pleasant.  We screw up when the heat's unbearable, but maybe now that it's a little cooler we can win again?

Yes, I'm grasping desperately at straws.  What of it?

It really would have been for Guzman to get a hit, we score another run and have Armas end the inning.

Instead, we start the 2nd inning with the pitcher.  Not a good way to start.

Brad, Brad, Brad, this pitcher's pitch count is already sky high.  Don't swing at the first pitch!

Ok, please.  Work the pitch count.  Make him throw strikes.

And for God's sake, don't swing at the first pitch!!!

If Church hadn't tried to steal, we'd have a runner in scoring position and only one out!

I think it was a missed hit and run.... that's the ugliest base stealing attempt I've seen in a long time
