$30 million may be a bit high, but $20 is too low. Honestly, I think his prior deal with us is still an accurate gauge of his value.

Even if Butler's deal was too high, You certainly have to think LaRoche is worth more that 2/3 of that contract to someone. I'm kind of surprised AL teams that want to contend like Cleveland, Texas and the Angels aren't more interested in him as a 1B/DH type at that price. He still kills RHP.

LaRoche doesn't have the best recent track record- of the four years here, he was terrible/injured for two, good to great for one and above average for one.

I'm not saying he does, and some teams are going to shy away from him based on that. But the projections are going to have him looking pretty much like last season, and that's a more valuable player than Billy Butler, right? I don't know, maybe not.

LaRoche was here for four years? Wow, I somehow completely forgot that.

If it makes you feel better, he was only "here" for two of them...

His .781 OPS in DC is exactly the same as Jason Heyward's career numbers.

Fulltime DH no?
do they still have Jaso under contract?  Or does Jaso catch and move Norris to the bench?  If Jaso is gone, then I guess he is the full-time DH.

I'm trying to recall all their platoons.  I think Reddick, Vogt, Moss, and a few others all platooned last year as LHBs.

Eno Sarris's thoughts:
Quote
Of course, it will be weird to have a full-time DH on the team when they’ve had some injury problems with the existing guys on the roster and one of their catchers may not catch again and now they’ve got a glut of guys in the corner outfield and first base and so on and so on. But the offseason isn’t over yet, so the depth chart can be figured out later.

Thinking about this a bit, maybe they move one of their guys who put on equipment and squat behind the plate as pitchers throw pitches to them, hitters force them to field hoping for wild throws,  and runners take bases whenever they want (notice I did not call any of those guys "catchers").

Butler stopped playing first when Hosmer was called up. He started 30+ games at first last year. If they'll start Jaso behind the plate, they'll get Butler some time on the field as well.

His only starts came when Hosmer was hurt. Otherwise he would have had <5.

Not taking into account that Heywards also offers superior defense, speed and plays a tougher position.

Heyward's ten years younger as well. But LaRoche still has offensive value that shouldn't be overlooked.

But hey, what about LaRoche being nominated for a gold glove?   He must be a superior fielder.

Ike Davis in 2014: .233/.344/.378, .324 wOBA, 108 wRC+
Billy Butler in 2014: .271/.323/.379, .311 wOBA, 97 wRC+

Butler gets $30M. Davis gets DFA'd. Davis is actually a year younger too.

I don't get it.

Pedro Alvarez is going to play first, they don't need Davis especially at +/- $4M.

Agreed. He's going to be a pretty decent part of a platoon for somebody.

They love ex-Nat first basemen named Adam.
