No Dukes, No Guzman, No Zimmerman tonight....

Acta on Dukes:
Quote
Here is what Acta said about Dukes after the game:

On the injury: "He's fine. He hit himself with the bat and then the calf just kind of cramped up on him. It's not pulled or anything. Hopefully he will be fine."

On whether he will miss time: "I don't think so. We'll see how he is when shows up tomorrow, but it was nothing more than a charley horse. That's what we called it. No pull or anything."

Ray Knight to Debbi: No one cares more about the team than you.

JMad's reaction: PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT you have to be freakin kidding me.

BREAK OUT THE BROOMS! LETS COMPLETE THE SWEEP! gotta payback the Reds for the sweep in Cincinnati.

I'm concerned about Dukes, hopefully it is just a cramp and he'll be ready for the Rockies.

i expect Balester to build on his last outing and learn from his last outing vs the reds, DON'T throw that pitch  to Dunn again.

Zimmerman first. Won't play today. He had his right hand wrapped in a massive swath of bandaging today. He's still waiting for the swelling to die down before he can really do anything. He looked pretty dismal. At one point, he was just sitting in his clubhouse chair with his head buried in his boxers' glove-sized bandage.

Dukes, who sustained a calf cramp/charley horse in the eighth inning yesterday, is still feeling sore today. Also won't play.

Guzman took infield grounders pre-game, but didn't participate in batting practice. Though he's appeared in two games since his July 25 injury, playing an inning at shortstop in each, he hasn't had an at bat. The team's repeated willingness to throw him into games indicates there's no plan to put him on the DL.

In fact, GM Jim Bowden believes all of these guys should be back this week.

His words:

"(Guzman) is making progress. I think he'll be back this week. I'm not going to guess whether it's Tuesday or Friday. We're going to make sure he's 100 percent; we don't want a setback. It's tough when you have a contusion that far in. But he's making progress. So is Zim. So... I think you'll see them both this week. I'm not going to put a time on it."

And Dukes?

"Elijah is sore today. Again, you'll see him this week."

As for Boone, the team is sending him down to Florida -- he's leaving today -- where he'll follow a training program that should jump-start an eventual rehab assignment. Boone's calf injury, which has already caused him to miss 20 games, has been slow to improve. Still no timetable for his return.

Oh, and Hill.

I asked Bowden today about Hill's role if/when he rejoins the Nats (he targets a September return) because today's pitcher, Collin Balester, replaced Hill in the rotation. So, what happens with Hill in September? Turns out, he'll be back as a reliever.

"I don't think we have enough time to stretch him out to go back into the rotation," Bowden said. "I think he comes back in the bullpen. We'll put an inning plan together to build him up, but there's not enough time to properly do it."

I like the idea of Hill as a reliever.  He shouldn't be used as a full-time starter unless they're 100% certain he's completely well, and I don't think they can surmise that without seeing him face big league hitting.

Who's on the bench? Just Langerhans and Belliard?

Nice play by Orr.  Balester needs to settle down.  That was three straight pitches where he missed his target.

I like the idea of putting Hill in the bullpen when he comes back.  It would be stupid to put too much of the game on his shoulders (i.e 5-6 innings of work).  I think it will also be a good chance to see what his capacity is as a reliever.

bally terrific 1st inning.

and by the way casto has been getting better.  3 walks last night and a hit i'll take that.  he's not a power hitter.

He's improving. He had a huge RBI Single last night and also drew 3 walks.

Good start, CB.

I love his plate discipline, but I wish he could get more base hits.

dumb move to step out on that 3-1 pitch. Bonifacio Ks a lot so he should have been trying to hit that one.
