Update: I got a place. My train commute will be about 25 minutes each way. Just enough time to get some reading in. :)

Perfect for Kindle -  I recommend springing for 3g if you plan on subscribing to periodicals (oddly,  the Atlantic is now one of my favorite reads)

The 3G is worth it anyway. They've altered the lineup since we got ours in 2010, but at the time, the 3G + Wi-Fi Kindle cost $25 more than the Wi-Fi Only model. If you keep the device for two years, that's about $2 extra per month. To me that makes it an easy decision to spring for it (although in our case, we were given the Kindles as Christmas presents so it didn't matter). Among other things, it lets you start a download and then not worry about whether it will finish downloading before you run out the door, or if you fail to plan ahead and you're somewhere without Wi-Fi access you can still go online and get something to read.

Commuting to the District
Can be quite the pain
And one can quite often
Find themselves on a train

There’s much you can do
To help pass the time
I’ll list those things here
And I’ll do it in rhyme

I’ve mentioned before
About using sunglasses
To stare at the girls
And their yoga pants clad asses

If drooling over women
Isn’t exactly your style
There are other things to do
While you ride for a while

Break out your iPod
And listen to tunes
Or start the day out nicely
With a bag full of Blue Moons

If you need mental stimulation
Until the train ride ends
Have you tried that one game
It’s called “Words With Friends”

It’s kind of like Scrabble
And it’s good for all seasons
They had to change the name, though
For Copyright reasons

If you’re stuck in the “Old School”
Bust open a book
Or embrace technology
And go buy a nook

Be careful what you read though
You don’t want to get too worked up
Because you read “50 Shades”
And your zipper is stuck

Pack up some munchies
And enjoy a snack
Or go to the “Quiet Car”
And have a quick nap

You can read a good Crime Novel
About a nefarious caper
Or catch up on events
While reading the paper

You can get an iPad
And come log on here
And read hilarious rants
As the Panic Monkeys  Jeer

You can do lines of cocaine
Until your ride has ended
I say that in jest though
It’s not recommended

Read. Did that for about 30 years, whether commuting by subway within Manhattan or by train from NJ to Manhattan. Just got a job -- the tide-me-over job you get between 63, when the company tells you it wants to "get younger" and offers a package, and 66, when Social Security kicks in.

Unfortunately, my new job is down by Rutgers University, exit 9 on the Turnpike, and transportation is meant to bring people from the edge top the center...not the reverse.

I listen to a lot of music. Blah.

My Dad commuted for 37 years from North East and Lewisdale to Bennings Power Plant, just down river from Nats Park. PEPCO starts their shifts an hiour or two before the Federal government, so people don;t get stuck in traffic jams. He listened to the car radio...from the old radio variety shows in the late '40s, through the '50s and '60s. Originally, WWDC...I can't remember the hosts, but I think one of the guys was named Art Brown. He listened to Arch MacDonald during baseball season.

True story (or at least my Dad says so). One night Arch was late, so his assistant started the ballgame. The assistant used to keep score, track the other games, keep the dials set, but he was no broadcaster. MacDonald banged into the studio about the third inning, and said, "That <gosh> <darned> DeSoto...nothing but a bunch of junk! Dropped the transmission right in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue!". On air. They lost that sponsor.

(In Arch MacDonald's accent, best I remember, it would have sounded like "DeeeSota...nothin but a buncha Junk!. Drop the transmishn Right in the MIDDLE of Pennsavania Av-nue".
