Read. Did that for about 30 years, whether commuting by subway within Manhattan or by train from NJ to Manhattan. Just got a job -- the tide-me-over job you get between 63, when the company tells you it wants to "get younger" and offers a package, and 66, when Social Security kicks in.
Unfortunately, my new job is down by Rutgers University, exit 9 on the Turnpike, and transportation is meant to bring people from the edge top the center...not the reverse.
I listen to a lot of music. Blah.
My Dad commuted for 37 years from North East and Lewisdale to Bennings Power Plant, just down river from Nats Park. PEPCO starts their shifts an hiour or two before the Federal government, so people don;t get stuck in traffic jams. He listened to the car radio...from the old radio variety shows in the late '40s, through the '50s and '60s. Originally, WWDC...I can't remember the hosts, but I think one of the guys was named Art Brown. He listened to Arch MacDonald during baseball season.
True story (or at least my Dad says so). One night Arch was late, so his assistant started the ballgame. The assistant used to keep score, track the other games, keep the dials set, but he was no broadcaster. MacDonald banged into the studio about the third inning, and said, "That <gosh> <darned> DeSoto...nothing but a bunch of junk! Dropped the transmission right in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue!". On air. They lost that sponsor.
(In Arch MacDonald's accent, best I remember, it would have sounded like "DeeeSota...nothin but a buncha Junk!. Drop the transmishn Right in the MIDDLE of Pennsavania Av-nue".
