Lopez is the kind of guy that was so talented in HS that he never had to work at it. Now that he is challenged by other great athletes, he is frustrated that his "greatness" just does not win out.
Not to stray from your point (because I think you may be right) but this is exactly why a lot of pitchers are afraid to throw strikes when they get to the show.
