Return to Original tweet0EmailPrintWashington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman(notes) was held out of the lineup Monday due to abdominal "tenderness" in the same area where he had surgery two months ago.
Zimmerman missed more than two months this season after undergoing surgery to repair a tear of the rectus muscle in his abdomen. He suffered the injury in spring training and then aggravated early in the season, causing a lengthy stint on the disabled list.
The 26-year-old All-Star is now in danger of missing more time.
Zimmerman had been performing poorly at the plate and in the field since returning from the DL. For the season, he's hitting just .224 with three homers and 13 RBI in 107 at-bats. He's coming off a season in which he hit a career-best .307 with 25 homers and 85 RBI in 142 games.
Zimmerman also has four throwing errors since returning from the disabled list. Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reported last week that the third baseman made a decision to "overhaul his throwing mechanics in the middle of a season" to avoid future injuries.
The Nats are likely to have Zimmerman examined by a doctor to rule out anything serious.
