Yeah.

Saw it happen on MLB Network.

Shocked. Mattingly wasn't even thrown out arguing.

Seriously, why would it be so wrong for these kinds of calls to be able to be challenged or overturned?  That's pretty bad right there.

I'd be in favor of anything that doesn't slow the game down.  Get an extra umpire in the booth and have him or her review calls.

Balls and strikes would be tough...

If only there was some system that did it automatically- perhaps one used to grade umps or tha is instantly available for tv viewers

In the time it takes for a manager to argue with the umpire about a call, an extra ump in the booth could easily review the play and make a final call.  Wouldn't slow the game down it seems.

I don't care so much about balls and strikes being "wrong" as long as they are fair to both pitchers.  If a ball is going to be called a strike just low and outside for one pitcher, it should be a strike for the other pitcher.  That's fine.  Just be consistent.

Hell no I don't want Pitch f/x as the strike zone.

Every game would end 10-9... because the hitters would never swing at balls. It'd be terrible.

I wholeheartedly agree as this is what has given me hesitation before but I do wish there were *something* to ensure equity. I think umpires should be under threat of suspension without pay if they egregiously differentiate two different strike zones between teams.

My final view is that umps stay a part of the game but there needs to be some sort of challenge rule like nfls. Who cares if it makes the game longer

Wow, that was bad.  But the redeeming factor is that it was Hairston who was out - karma's a nag, isn't it? :stir:

Then change the zone, what you're really saying is that you don't want the umps calling the actual zone

I don't recall saying that.

if your gripe with pitch fx is the accuracy of the calls leading to more balls, it doesn't take a huge logical leap to get there

so if the accuracy of the pitch zone isn't your complaint with pitch fx, how exactly does it lead to 10-9 games?

He did.

Due to MLB rules, unless the 1B ump asks for help, the home plate ump can't intervene.

that's ridiculous.  Any ump should be able to go to any other ump and say "you blew that call" - if the 1B ump wants to stick to the call then that's fine, but nothing should stop the one ump from being able to tell another that they completely missed a call.

I'm all for some form of instant replay, but you don't even need it on this play. The other umps need to get theirs heads out of their asses, put their attitudes aside and then help Welke out on this play and get the call correct.

Welke is an ass-clown for not accepting help on this play. AND for lying to Don Mattingly's face. If you watch the video linked here -
http://goo.gl/iPmQt - and blow it up full screen. Mattingly gestures he was this far off the bag, and you can see Welke say, "No he wasn't."
