Jeff Kobernus signed ... announcement came out today and he was the only new name

The Washington Nationals today agreed to terms with second baseman Jeffrey Kobernus (second round, University of California), left-handed pitcher Chad Jenkins (17th round, Cecil Community College), left-handed pitcher Daniel Rosenbaum (22nd round, Xavier University), shortstop Kyle Breault (23rd round, Northville [MI] High), right-handed pitcher Brandon King (27th round, Martinsburg [WV] High), right-handed pitcher Matt Swynenberg (28th round, Black Hawk [IL] College) and right-handed pitcher Shane McCatty (34th round, Oakland [MI] University).  Nationals Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Nothing official but I would hope it would be Vermont

edit: There is an argument that he should be placed in Hagerstown given his age/experience

[UPDATE, 5:05 p.m.] - I just spoke to Kobernus, who is in DC today, and will soon be flying out to report to the Class A Vermont Lake Monsters. "I'll be with them tonight," Kobernus said. "I'm not sure if I'm gonna play tomorrow, but it could be. If not then, sometime really soon."

Kobernus's bonus is $705,000, which is very much in line with MLB-recommended slotting guidelines. Last year, the recommended bonus for the No. 50 pick was somewhere between $787,000 (the amount accepted by the 49th pick, Johnny Giavotella, a college second baseman selected by Kansas City) and $772,000 (the amount accepted by 51st pick, Anthony Gose, a high school outfielder drafted by Philly). But this year, remember, MLB is calling for a 10-percent cut in bonuses, in conjunction with the economic decline.

I don't care when they sign Morris, as long as he gets signed.  He was one of the most abused pitchers in college baseball last season, so I don't see him throwing more than a few innings this minor league season... if any.

2 outings of over 140 pitchers isn't exactly good for a pitcher's arm

From the Topeka paper, link via NJ:

According to Sawyers*, pitcher A.J. Morris has yet to sign with the Washington Nationals but is expected to do so soon. Morris' agents are waiting for the rest of the fourth-round picks to sign in hopes of making Morris the highest-paid player in the bunch, Sawyers said.

*Sawyers is an assistant at Kansas State.

Man I forgot about this signing thread before I made my own Morris and Applebee signing thread. But anyway keep it going Nats. Lets get the top 30 signed and it's smooth sailing from there.

Does anyone have any info on Applebee?  The UC Riversides site's most recent info on him is the 2007 season.

Applebee's '08 numbers: 74.2 IP 94 H 43 R 37 ER 12 BB 55 K (3-5, 4.46 ERA, .315 BA Against)

Applebee's '09 numbers: 89 IP 84 H 44 R 37 ER 20 BB 63 K (10-2, 3.74 ERA, .250 BA Against)

video of him throwing: http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=4881005

looks like a soft-tossing lefty with good off-speed stuff.

Paul Applebee, LHP, UC Riverside- You may think you just read this report, but I assure you, it is different. Applebee is a soft-tossing lefty who has had a lot of success, but little attention from scouts. Where he does have an advantage over Josh Spence is in the area of projectability. While Spence is fairly short and mature physically, Applebee has plenty of room to fill out at 6'3", 185.

He doesn't throw hard, sitting in the 85-87 range, and his changeup is his best pitch. Fortunately for him, it's a really, really good one; one of the best changeups in the draft, in fact. He also shows some feel for a slider, but hasn't developed it all that well. Good sleeper pick for a team with a need for left-handed pitching and who values results over style.

Sounds like a John Lannan lite (obviously with some work needed).
