Soccer Thread (2011)

I saw Jmad's American Soccer thread, and as much as I am all about American pride, we don't do soccer.  I've started watching some of the English Premier League.  It's really entertaining.

IT may be blasphemy, but I'm enjoying Ian Darke and MacManaman (sp?).  They are perfectly willing to say, "this was a bad game."

Absolutely. It's a really awesome league.

Ian Darke and Martin Tyler are two of my favorite commentators.

Have you watched any of the Italian games on FSC? They let this one dude do all of them by himself. He's great.

Arsenal/West Ham at 12:30...back in the day, that matchup was generally preceded and followed by huge running street battles. Spurs are more of an on-field rival, but West Ham has the unruly east ender fanbase.  Of course these days it's probably only placid old boojies who can afford a seat to any of the London Premier League matches.

Watched the end of the Wolves- Manchester City match.  City almost spit the bit with a 4-1 lead. Are they really that bad defensively?  The moral equivalent of a Paul Westhead basketball team?

The numbers seem to imply that, since they are a very high-scoring team with the lowest GD of the top four (#=games played, goal diff, points):

Full Barclays Premier League table
1    Man City
23   18   45
2   Man Utd
20   24   44
3   Arsenal
22   21   43
4   Chelsea
22   19   38

Relegation is pretty much inevitable for West Ham.  Just in time for their fancy new Olympic stadium.

No, they have a great defense. Probably the best in the league. Just an off game. Taking off Toure for Lescott made no sense to me.

Tevez is an amazing two-way player.  Also the "second ugliest man in Britain".

Jonathan Spector was the only American in the game.  Played pretty well despite a dumb turnover.

Damn, Aston Villa got Darren Bent. They've really improved their team this week.

Carlos Tevez is whooping as these days. He just scored another one.

Leicester played pretty well, considering the competition.

Arsenal/Leeds (FA Cup) is on at 3:00.  How far Leeds has fallen, though they are scratching their way back up.  I remember seeing them play DC United in a friendly at RFK in '96 or '97, back when they were still in the Premier League...they went all the way down to League One in the interim.

I'm rooting for Leeds, Cardiff City, and Nottingham Forest to get promoted.

It would be awesome if Arsenal loses to Leeds today.

The FA Cup match is on FSC today. A lot of games are on that channel. ESPN picks up 2 or 3 games a month, too.

Ah, I'd have to pay more money that I don't have to watch those right now.  I don't care enough to shell it out right now.  I'll stick with my games on ESPN2.  Probably will mean I don't get to see the championship though, right?

ESPN2 carries most of the European games, i.e. the so called "Champions League".  I'm not sure whether they carry any of the regular league or FA Cup games.
