Yeah, I hear ya. When I lived in London in the 80s, there were parts of town where you might as well have been on Mars (which didn't stop me from trying to chat people up in pubs, but for all I knew they were speaking urdu).
I was in Wales a few years ago and a couple of folks were trying to talk me in "Welsh". Now Wales is my heritage and I couldn't get it. It reminded me of the evening in the Lakes District when I shared a few with a couple of retired Birmingham bobbies while their wives did some shopping. The drunker we got, the less I understood and we were all speakin' English. Welsh is like that without the alcohol.
