Son and daughter-in-law US Army, 2002 - 2009. Each served one deployment. She was in Iraq 2004 - 05. Not fun.

USN 1976-1982. Serving this great nation was is the most worthwhile thing I've ever done. I was disappointed but understood when they turned me down after 9/11 (I was 43 at the time and had been denied reinlistment in 1982 because i had a freakin' hernia). I wanted to blow the crap out of some of those MF'ers. I'd go back in today if they'd let me. Once you've worn a uniform you never get that out of your blood. Long may she wave!

Oh, all the comrades e'er I had,
They're sorry for my going away,
And all the sweethearts e'er I had,
They'd wish me one more day to stay,
But since it falls unto my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I gently rise and softly call,
Good night and joy be with you all.

RIP Cpl Chamberlain and Sgt Wrightsman. You are missed ....

Does drafted count?   Taps for the fallen Slateman  ...  one of my favorites and meaningful military poems by Kipling  ...  "Tommy"

I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Actually found a great opportunity with the Navy Reserve (did USMCR 2003-2009) which will hopefully help me get into something more lucrative in the civilian world.  Don't want to babysit thugs the rest of my life!  Physical at MEPS scheduled for next Wed.

Not sure exactly which unit I'll be with.  Clearance and a good deal of schooling involved so it's a lengthy process to endure before i actually get assigned somewhere

If I met height and weight standards, I'd consider the reserves. But I don't want to fight that uphill battle

Well I was finally able to get up to MEPS for my physical yesterday for USNR.  Wow, did I feel like an old man.  Can't wait to finish up paperwork next week and get back in.

Is that what they use to get new recruits?  Really fishing for troops!  ;)

It's your first introduction to the true military. They wake you up at oh dark stupid, and put you on a buss. You spend all day doing a series of basic medical examinations (eyes, hearing, blood test, ect). Then they make you duck walk in bare feet and underwear. Then they make you wait a while and pull you in to an office with a doctor who gives you a look over, tells you to drop your pants and cough, then has you bend over while your pants are down and grab your toes.

After that, it's off to boot camp

Not many troops, but the occasional boot.
