Any info on Robert Gilliam?
« Topic Start: December 22, 2011, 05:59:04 PM »
The Nats got him with Gio.  It sounds like he is a power arm, but I can't find any scouting reports.

good k and bb rates, high hr rate (presumably a low xFIP)

@BenBadler

Arm strength, up to the mid-90s, but results haven't matched RT @RealNats113437 Any scouting report on Robert Gilliam? Thanks.

Per BR, looks like the K/BB numbers have matched, but the ERA hasn't. Probably big innings and dingers.

thanks.  Hopefully, Menhart can help him in Harrisburg. I am not worried about that ERA in the Cali league.

not really his era was in the 3's.  that is not bad and with his stuff he could easily improve.

Did you really just use ERA to claim a relief pitcher had a good year?

Law says Gilliam is filler, doesn't impact the deal in his view at all.

I can't imagine Gilliam is that much worse than Milone. He certainly has more upside.

75% of his appearances were scoreless efforts (closer to 70% if you include two appearances with unearned runs), the other 25% were pretty bad.  As long as he isn't one of the back 3, that is fine by my standards.

Baseball America:

Quote
Gilliam has three things going for him: arm strength, control and a feel for three pitches. He finished third in the California League this season with both 156 strikeouts and 164 1/3 innings, and he's more than just a throw-in for Washington. Gilliam sits in the 92-94 mph range and while his slider and changeup grade as below-average presently, both could become average offerings with further refinement. That could mean a future in the bullpen, but it also gives him an outside shot at a future as a mid-rotation starter.

He could be a very very nice throw in for us.

I have not looked, but I'm guessing his ERA as a starter in the California League was better than Daniel Bard's.  Throw out Cali league eras.
