The latest Cuban prospect expected to hit the market just might be the most coveted young outfielder to leave the island in the last 12 months.

Outfielder Yasel Puig, 21, has defected from Cuba and is in the process of establishing residency in Mexico, the first step to becoming eligible for free agency, his agent Jaime Torres said.

A showcase for Major League scouts is tentatively scheduled for later this week in Mexico City.

"As of Monday morning, I submitted information to Major League Baseball and the Players Association that he has taken up residency in Mexico and will shortly establish legal permanent residency in Mexico," Torres said. "We should have documentation of his legal permanent residency in Mexico soon and as soon as I have that, I will submit it to Major League Baseball and I hope and expect that he will be declared a free agent immediately."

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Puig is a known commodity in international circles. He played two seasons for Cienfuegos in the island's top league, Cuban National Series (Serie Nacional), and was a member of the country's national team that finished second in the 2011 World Port Tournament in The Netherlands.

"There has not been a player as proven and as young to come to the States from Cuba," Torres said. "It's one thing to come to the United States at 19 or 20 years old with a few at-bats or some experience on a national level but this guy has years of national experience under his belt."

It's not like the Nats will be in the mix anyways. They stay out of the foreign market for talent.

Yeah there is a tradition for naming kids after historical figures in Cuba, and to a lesser extent Venezuela and other parts of the Carribean. Hence names like Dayan Viciedo, named for the Israeli general Moshe Dayan.

According to ESPN.com:

Quote
Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig has reached agreement on a seven-year, $42 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, sources told ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com.

The agreement is pending a physical exam, and would be the largest dollar figure accorded a Cuban defector, surpassing the four-year, $36 million deal of Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Céspedes in February.

The Dodgers are trying to create a buzz so their next RSN contract dwarfs any known to date.  Within 10 years the Dodgers will be head and shoulders above all, including the moribund Yankee and Red Sox franchises. Magic Johnson isn't Michael Jordan, he actually knows what he is doing.

It doesn't matter with the RSN money they'll have soon.

That is crazy.  They might as well just sign a regular, non-international free agent at those prices.  At least they'd know what kind of player they'd be getting.  This guy might not turn into anything at all.

You're not getting a good free agent at 7 years 42 million

After July 2nd, international signings fall under the new CBA where all teams pretty much have the same amount of money - and it's in the $3M range.

So, look at it this way, Puig is the last snow shovel in the Home Depot the evening of the big blizzard. How much are you going to pay to get that last snow shovel. Or that last case of water....

Dumb question - but how will this impact guys with posting fees and insane contracts like Darvish and Dice-K?

For whatever reason, they are different as they are posted, not actual FA's, in the way the kids from the DR/Cuba/Korea are.

Since Japan is considered a professional league, MLB has a relationship with them. I haven't heard anything about the rules on dealing with Japanese pros changing in the new CBA.

How many Cuban prospects end up being worth a fraction of that?  Probably not many.  Even percentage-wise, compared to a regular free agent signing, the odds are stacked against this guy being worth anywhere close to that amount.  I'd rather sign 42 lesser prospects for $1 million each than this one guy.  Or if they want an outfielder, sign one guy like Willingham or Beltran and then a few prospects.

Unless this guy is as can't miss as Bryce Harper or Mike Trout, I can't see this as being a good decision.
