The "Software and Web" Geek thread.
« Topic Start: October 29, 2009, 10:53:14 PM »
excuse me for starting this one, but the Geek thread seems to be a bit Hardware and OS focused.

so I figured we might benefit from a separate place to discuss Software and such.

this thread is for desktop programs, web browsers, web applications, social networking platforms, email services and programs, and so on, and so forth. but not the OS' themselves. we can leave the OS talk in the Geek thread where it was.

I know this thread won't ever get as big as the other one, but it'll still be here if anyone needs it.

so...discuss.

I don't agree with your assertion, but if you'd like your own thread I'm not going to stop you

Avast! and  OpenOffice are essential for me.

I love Lightning, a plugin for Thunderbird that integrates a tasklist and calendar. That calendar keeps me sane.

NFL: http://www.mysportscal.com/nfl.html

NHL: http://www.mysportscal.com/nhl.html

NBA: http://www.mysportscal.com/nba.html

You don't even need that, Google calendar has built-in options for the schedules for pretty much any pro league, and college too, I believe.

I don't know anything about it. I was considering signing up for it. I'm looking for a decent music service that isn't iTunes.

Buy per song or subscription?  Amazon is pretty good.

Napster is java based and runs in Linux, Windows, and I assume Mac.

Unlimited streaming plus 5 downloads a month for 5 dollars. Unbeatable. Very good customer service too. Recommended.

I'm a simpleton. I use Media Player Classic for everything.

Is Winamp currently worth the download?

What media players do you guys have?

I use GOM Player for videos. Winamp for music.
On Windows I like VLC for video, use it on Mac too whenever I come across something that doesn't play in Quicktime.

I used to use VLC, but GOM seems to handle Blu-Ray better. Both are solid media players, though.

Yeah, it's great. You should definitely check it out.
