without breaking the NDA - I think that there is a pretty significant disconnect between what CCP is presenting Dust 514 as, and what it actually is, as far as game structure goes.

I know there will be snarky responses, but i'm being serious.

anyone wants to know my thoughts, hit me on PM.

Got damn I'm out of touch with the video game world.  I have no idea who CCP is or this Dust thing.

I need to start my backlog.

Black Mesa, the fan mod that completely redoes/updates the original Half Life 1, is finally out.

It's free - you need a Steam Account and Source SDK 2007 installed.

It's pretty cool, played it for a bit this morning. Great if you liked the original games. And it's free, so that's a big bonus for me

The saga of Final Fantasy 14 is highly, highly interesting and unprecedented in the MMORPG genre and perhaps video games as a whole.

The eyes of the entire industry needs to be on this game.

will expand on this when I get home to my computer.

Never heard of X-COM but it looks interesting. How does it play?

The new one isn't out yet but by the sounds of it, it's the same style of play as the originals, so Isometric turn-based squad-based tactical.  Sort of like chess with laser beams and explosions and marines and aliens.

Thus far, FFXIV has been a laughable mess that has caused a great deal of damage to the Final Fantasy brand.

Yeah but you don't have a view of the big picture here.

when has a game company ever taken a released game off the market, said "sorry we freaked up",  scrapped 90% of the game and remade it from near scratch due to bad reception? Especially in the MMORPG genre?

thats what Square Enix did to FFXIV. thats why its interesting and unprecedented.

in addition to doing that, they allowed their subscribers to play for free for a year while they  made the current version of the game at least playable.

if FFXIV 2.0 is even remotely good when it comes out, it could set a new expectation for failed MMORPGs, which these days are just made Free To Play with Microtransactions and then milked for as much money as possible before being inevitably shut down.

in addition to that, it's coming to the PS3, where it could find considerable success, seeing as there is only one other MMORPG on the system.

DCUO got a big make over becoming FTP and it took off in popularity after that.

not really.  DCUO just make some tweaks and added a cash shop system. which is what most failed MMOs do these days. DCUO really, really benefitted from being the only real MMO on the PS3. something like 70% of DCUO's total playerbase is on the PS3.

FFXIV is doing something completely different.

from what I have heard, FFXIV 2.0 only uses about 10% of the original game, and i think that 10% is character design based on trailers and screenshots. it's got a completely different graphics engine and gameplay design as well. for all intents and purposes, it is a brand new game.

So if you bought the original game... Do you still have access to the new one?

yep. you get the new game for free I believe, if you were a subscriber already.

the servers are shutting down in November, and Sept 29th is the last day to actually start the game as a new player. from Sept 29th to Nov 1st, current subs will be able to play the game,  Nov 1st, FFXIV 1.0 ends, and beta testing for 2.0 on the PC will start. no clue on the PS3 Beta, but supposedly, PC and PS3 will launch at the same time, and play on the same servers.

now with that said, I have told you everything I know about the relaunch lol. I am eagerly waiting for more details. Supposedly FFXIV was playable at the Tokyo Game Show convention, but maybe not, since there have not been any impressions on the web about it.

PS3 and PC playing together would be neat.

I'm wondering what this supposed Steambox is going to be.

I remember the original, but I didn't play it. The new one looks amazing. Game Informer just did a pretty good article on it.

I'm finally going to play Might & Magic Heroes VI. I doubt I'm going to like it as much as Civilization V, but I have heard some good things about it.
