Plus something valuable

are you saying that detwiler isn't valuable or that we just need to add something else?

I/M/O, Detwiler gets the Ellsbury deal done without anything added.  They are a little too left-handed in their rotation with Lester and Doubront (and maybe Morales), so it isn't ideal, but that is the right talent level.

They originally drafted Meyer before he went to college but could not close a deal. Meyer is a lot, and they could use a fig-leaf player to go onto their roster.  They have some minor league SS/3B depth, so perhaps Morse and Meyer for Ellsbury and a SS in their system not named Bogaerts.  I am not too keen on putting Meyer in a deal, but I don't know what righty plus Morse in the Nats system would get the deal done.

They have a hole at first. With JB Jr. and Bryce Brentz, I'd imagine that Morse would be interesting to them as a righty to play first for a few years with an extension, maybe more than committing to Cody Ross.

Alex Gordon plays for the Royals.

No GM in their right mind is going to Alex Gordon for a number 5 starter. Quit kidding yourselves.

Agreed.  Gordon has a reasonable contract and is coming off two great years.  His start was slow this year, and had a HR / ISO drop, but his overall numbers were in the same ballpark as last year when he was terrific.

I don't think Detwiler gets the job done on his own, but calling Detwiler a blanket #5 is like calling John Lannan our ace three years ago (which people did).  Det would step in and be the Royals's #2 at least.

He would easily be there #1 starter

Meyer could be of interest to the royals too.  They NEED pitching and he will probably start 2013 at AA and could conceivably help them by september and start 2014 in their rotation.  add in Karns and that could also be the beginnings of a trade.

If LaRoche comes back I'd personally rather have Moore than Gordon, fyi.  Bigger areas that need to be addressed than LF.

If Meyer or Detwiler is the price for a rental of Ellsbury, then I'd pass.  He's been injured a lot over the past few years.  And there are several other center fielders available as free agents or in trades.

I don't think the Royals make a good trade partner.  They don't need Rendon or Goodwin and Meyer isn't good enough to net someone like Alex Gordon.

We're probably not going to trade Detwiler.  They stuck with him for a few years and he has finally proven capable of giving the team some quality innings as a starter.  He's relatively cheap and the team probably needs that with all the guys that will need extensions in the next couple of years.

We've already proven we won't trade Detwiler in 2011 when he was a deal breaker for Bourn ...

No, we've proven that we wouldn't include him in that deal.  That doesn't mean we wouldn't include him in any deal

Alex Gordon is going nowhere. Stop kidding yourselves.

Here's another back end of the pen proposal: Brian Wilson. He's a likely non-tender and Sergio Romo has replaced him as SF's bearded closer.

Finally, sanity  There is no way in hell the Royals trade a 6 WAR player for Detwiler.

Minor moves this offseason. Maybe a bullpen arm. I don't see anything major happening. Then, when we're hovering around .500 at the ASB, we'll want Rizzo's head for not making big trades in the offseason.

Why do you expect making no changes to a young team that won 98 games last year will be hovering around .500?

I thought Chris Young would be a decent option for the Nats in CF.  The Dbacks basically gave him away.

The A's may need a 2B now and could have a spare outfielder.  I don't think I'd trade Lombo for Crisp.  Maybe we could send them another minor league catcher?  Ha.

Chilax dude, why can't we speculate on what it might take to get a guy here?

I remember reading some alex gordon trade rumors at the deadline.  Yes to wilson.  He would have to be ok with a set up role though which he might not be ok with given his credentials.

So? I remember reading Ryan Zimmerman rumors two years ago, but that doesn't mean that anything was ever close. Gordon is more or less KC's equivalent to Zimm. (Butler is too though.) He's one guy they absolutely will keep. If they can get some pitching this offseason- along with Duffy and Paulino returning from TJ- they'll probably have a shot at .500 next season. They're basically where we were during the 2010/11 offseason. They've got good pieces in place and they'll be looking to add some impact players to start really moving towards contention, not subtract the impact players they already have.

It has been reported heavily that Dayton Moore wants to trade Gordon. Don't get it myself, but Moore isn't known for being smart. I get trading Gordon as much as I do J-Up, but where there is smoke there is fire. My thoughts on what it would take are Espinosa, Moore, and Meyer. Another outfielder that could be on the move is Choo who would be an excellent lead-off option for the Nationals. Pagan may be the best overall though as he upgrades the defense, provides a lead-off option, won't cost as much, and won't bloke Goodwin when he is ready sometime in 2014.

The D-backs have put any of the trade Upton rumors to bed with the trade of Chris Young.
