Minnesota declined their option on the Capper. Thoughts?

If this is the "upgrade the bullpen" move everyone is hoping for, then no.

If we are just playing with Lerner Bucks, and this does not preclude us from going after a Madson type, but rather just giving a guy we know and like a chance to make the team and contribute, then go ahead. I didn't pay close attention, but hasn't he had a rough go of it lately?

Kilgore tweets Zimmerman had 'full arthroscopic' surgery on his shoulder today. Ready in 6 weeks.

There is no mention of issues after the procedure so I am going to say we can expect the Zim that CAN throw to first base WITHOUT looking like Smalls from the Sandlot

They won't know for six weeks. Probably longer because he's going to have to build up strength.

Austin Jackson won't be a free agent until 2016

Except I don't think there's a CF problem, right now.

CF and leadoff aren't problems.

Bryce Harper can be a top of the line center fielder. He may be the best in the league by 2014.

Leadoff is Jayson Werth. He is so good there. Behind him Lombardozzi is pretty solid there.

At this point, we have no "glaring" holes. Just about trying to add quality to quality.

You know Yankee fans are probably saying the same thing right now, right? (except their talk would involve moving one of Jackson/Granderson to a corner OF spot)

Yes to Werth leading off but no to Lombo. A .317 OBP is not going to cut it for leading off on any team, let alone a contender.

2 needs to be Harper or Zimmerman, and that's that.

Not as the every day guy, but if he gets spot duty there on occasion, he'll be just fine.

Well, you want Zim driving in runs, not setting the table.

Harper's power/speed combo makes him ideal for the 2 spot, but Zimmerman would do if Harper struggles.  He'll be able to drive in Werth whenever Werth gets on base, and all of the XBH will allow him to score his share of runs as well.

Goodwin is coming on so I'm beginning to think that by 2014 Goodwin will be the CF and the LH leadoff hitter that will fit in the lineup just right. Move Harper to RF, Werth to LF and Morse, Moore, ALR will have to be sorted out.

No to Lombo anywhere in the starting lineup.

Is there an opposite emoticon of :az:? I want one for Lombardozzi.

Why?

As a rookie, he hit .273/.317/.354 in almost 400 at bats. He hit over half the time in the leadoff spot. He can play 2B, SS, or 3B. He also subbed in for left field.

As a 23/24 year old rookie he showed a ton of potential.

I guess I'm into OPS way too much. I love guys that can get on base, hit for power, and play defense. Thats my ideal player, think Werth with the Phillies.

I know you can't get this everywhere, but I'd like a starter to have at least 2 of those qualities. Thats why I'm deathly against Lombo>Espinosa. Lombardozzi is good for what he does now.

I've also played OOTP way too much for the past 6 years, so I'm a stat geek.

A ton of potential? Wouldn't that have placed him as one of our top prospects? I think we're seeing exactly what he's capable of. A utility/bench player who can play great defense and bat in the .270-.280s. He's also the type of guy that can fill in if a player is injured. I think he can start on multiple teams, but I don't think he'll start here. But I wouldn't mind him filling in until Rendon gets here if Espinosa doesn't perform.

Harper's power/speed combo makes him ideal for the 2 spot, but Zimmerman would do if Harper struggles.  He'll be able to drive in Werth whenever Werth gets on base, and all of the XBH will allow him to score his share of runs as well.

That's an interesting argument. But Zimmerman is fairly slow so he may not be able to get far on the basepaths if he only gets singles. I wonder if the lack of speed is worth the occasional double. But I would still have confident in him driving in Werth at least. But that's why I like him in the 3 spot. If both Harper and Werth do their job, then Zimmerman can easily score both.
