And now the "Other Shoe Drops".......2010 P-Nats Hitting Coach, Matt Nokes, was released by the Nationals....and smaller news is that P-Nats GM, Jonathan Griffith, has resigned and taken a job as GM with the Pensacola (FL.) Pelicans..... Very surprised with the release of the Hitting coach.....

(I did not see this posted anywhere else,)

What the hell?  Moore has the fantastic 2nd half and Burgess finally starts hitting and this is the reward for getting that out of them?

Washington Nationals
No. 1 Prospect: Stephen Strasburg, RHP (first overall)
What Was Said: “Could be the best pitcher in baseball... if everything breaks right.”
Analysis: Strasburg was looking to be well on his way to being just that when his elbow popped. He should be fine in the end, but emphasis is on should, as the return rate from Tommy John surgery is phenomenal and getting better every year, but still not 100 percent.
Two Through Eleven: Slowed by hand issues all season, catcher Derek Norris (second) became an on-base machine with little power, but he deserves a bit of a mulligan. Reliever Drew Storen (third) eased into big-league closing duties, but that's more a function of the team than his talent, as both his numbers and his scouting reports are more in set-up man area. Infielder Danny Espinosa continued to show plenty of secondary skills to make up for a low average, and should be the everyday second baseman in 2011, while Ian Desmond (fifth) already has the shortstop job, although 'inconsistent' is the one word to best describe his 2010 season. Slugger Michael Burgess did little in the Carolina League but exploded (.284/.391/.649) in the final month of the season at Double-A to regain some lost luster. Similarly, speedster Eury Perez hit .339/.384/.451 in the second half at Low-A Hagerstown while leading the Sally League with 64 stolen bases. The bottom of the list did not fare so well as second baseman Jeff Kobernus (eighth) did nothing in his full-season debut, while hard-throwing right-hander Juan Jaime (10th) missed the season following Tommy John surgery.
Sleeper: Lefty Atahualpa Severino had a 3.34 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse, but his peripherals failed to impress and his splits show he won't be a LOOGY.

Wondering if Cathcart is coming back next season as the coach of the P-Nats or not at all (due to family health problems), or being moved up....anybody heard anything? Also, anybody heard who the new hitting coach will be for the P-Nats? And will Strasburg be coming to Potomac sometime next season for rehab? And Bryce Harper, will he start at Potomac or Harrisburg?
Anybody heard anything or is it too early. Since the P-Nats have already come out with their 2011 schedule, and are selling 2011 season plans, I thought the above might be nice to know......

Coaching staff have not gotten contracts/assignments yet.  Should be soon.
Minor league teams are not determined until the end of Spring Training.  Potomac roster is the last one set and there are changes up until they leave camp.

So...Gary Cathcart still has a job, even with a two level demotion, but Matt Nokes does a bang up job as hitting coach and is completely gone?  I wonder what Nokes did to get completely dropped from the system?

Cause Gorzagonzo is a major leaguer, which trumps minor leaguers.

Does anyone here seen Paul Demny pitch?  He's put up decent numbers at Hagerstown.  The ERA is nothing to write home about, but the peripherals are nice.  Looks kind of like Will Atwood did going into last year.  I was wondering if they're going to bump him up to Potomac this year.

No shock here. Huge bust who had no choice but to resort to steroids to try to make it. Wonder if he did them in HS too. He was supposed to be a stud.

Nats farmhand Nieto suspended for PEDs
By Dave Sheinin

Adrian Nieto, a catcher in the Nationals' farm system, was suspended for 50 games Thursday after testing positive for two banned substances, Major League Baseball announced in a news release. Nieto, who spent 2010 with low Class A Hagerstown, tested positive for Oxandrolone, a synthetic anabolic steroid, and metabolite.

Nieto, 21, is a switch-hitter who was born in Cuba, played high school baseball in Plantation, Fla., and was taken by the Nationals in the fifth round of the 2008 draft. He has struggled offensively during his three seasons in the team's farm system, hitting a combined .210 with two homers and 34 RBI in 110 games in rookie ball and Class A.

His suspension will begin at the start of the 2011 season.

When you're taking two sets of illegal drugs... you know you don't have the talent to make it.

He could have been a backup catcher. I can see an OF doing that at 21, but a catcher, come on.

If you can catch, as you said, eventually you'll make it to the bigs just based on intangibles and defensive skills alone.

Pretty dumb move.

He was a 5th round HS pick who got a normal signing bonus.  He wasn't ever projected as a stud.  He didn't even hit in rookie ball.

That's just not true:

The Washington Nationals thought they were lucky to get switch-hitting catcher Adrian Nieto in the fifth round of the 2008 Draft and they said so. Maybe they should have kept their mouths shut, because Nieto demanded - and got - money normally reserved for a player taken as high as the third round to sign with the Nationals.

Washington, who would have been figured to spend around $180,000 to sign Nieto, doled out more than twice that amound [$376,000] to sign Nieto. No other fifth rounder had gotten more than $225,000 this season. The rationale is that Nieto slipped because of concerns over an elbow injury, which the Nationals are satisfied is 100% healed, so they finally blinked and gave him the deal that he wanted.

Outside of first round pick Aaron Crow, who is also still unsigned, Nieto was probably the most important signing for the Nationals in the final days before the August 15th signing deadline. Nieto could have gone on to play at Miami Dade College, but elected to sign the deal with the Nationals instead.

With the deadline looming for this Friday, the Nationals still have Crow and two other top five picks - high schoolers Danny Espinosa and Graham Hicks - unsigned to round out getting their top 10 picks in the fold. Outside of the top 10, there are still 21 Nationals' picks that are still unsigned and many of them are likely to go unsigned.

Nieto, who was generally thought of as the best switch-hitting catcher in the draft, will report to the Nationals Gulf Coast League team on Tuesday and will immediately join their active roster.

Well over slot for that season.

Read it as 176 instead of 376.
