DC United: Freddy Adu Walks...

Just heard on George Michael's Sports...

Quote from: "AP"
D.C. United sends Freddy Adu off to Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY -- Freddy Adu was traded Monday from D.C. United to Real Salt Lake, ending a sometimes tumultuous three-year run in Washington for the highly touted teenager who clashed with his coach and was often frustrated by his role.

The 17-year-old will move to an MLS city in need of a marketable star as it hopes to boost attendance and gain support for a new stadium. He will also get to be an attacking midfielder, a position he never played on a consistent basis with United.

He is not eligible to transfer to a club outside the United States until he turns 18 next June 2.

"It is never easy to part with players, especially one like Freddy," United coach Peter Nowak said. "Freddy desired to play a different role than the one we offered here at D.C., so we hope this move can aid that wish."

United also sent goalkeeper Nick Rimando to Real Salt Lake. In return, United will receive a major player allocation, the rights to goalkeeper Jay Nolly and future considerations.

kudos on the scoop (and I'm a DCU fan & season ticket holder!!).  Not sure what to make of this...it's pretty much inevitable that Freddy will go to Europe next year, so this seems like an advantageous move...still, he has been the marquee player for several seasons (even if Christian Gomez was better last year).

There was an amusing piece in the WP sports section this weekend about a large and noisy contingent from DC United supporters clubs (specifically, Barra Brava and Screaming Eagles) going to friday's Caps game, which Ovechkin apparently thought well of.  DCU fans pretty much stand and sing for the whole match, so it's pretty well suited to a hockey game - though perhaps not baseball

SEEMS TO ME THE DIRIGENTE, MR. PAYNE, DID NOT LIKE FREDDY. LET FREDDY LOOSE. LIKE OTHER ATHLETES LET GO BY WASHINGTON TEAMS, FREDDY WILL EXCEL IN HIS NEW TEAM.

BY THE WAY, IF I WAS 50 YEARS YOUNGER, I WOULD BE A MEMBER OF BARRA BRAVA.

"50 years younger"??  Feh, Barra's "Elders" love elders!  Some of the songs are a bit ribald, but great crowd.  Must watch the smoke bombs though.
