Nationals agree to terms with 16 International Free Agents, highlighted by C Raudy Read and OF Randy Novas.

Read is a 17-year-old right-handed batter out of the Dominican Republic. He has demonstrated a powerful bat with superior plate discipline.

Novas, a 17-year-old from Dom. Rep., possesses advanced tools. The right-handed batter has consistently demonstrated power to all fields.

Another year of quantity over quality, I suppose.

The other 14 most not be that noteworthy... as this is the second time we've heard about Novas and Read.

See what NFA said about the bonuses. A $2 mil guy could washout, give me 20 $100k guys instead.

I'm pretty sure this is all the guys from the old Kilgore article. Retread. Old news.
In other words I think these guys were all signed July 2, 2010.

They didn't say they all got 100K bonuses... I'd imagine most are of the 10K variety.

Sigh. And they're just now getting around to officially announcing it.

Also, some of the signings are from Venezuela, this is good news.

Why?

It means they are branching out from just the DR.

Gotcha. I was hoping there were some awesome Venezuelan prospects this year or something.

Usually only the biggest international signings get announced right off the bat.  Smaller signings like this are announced in packs (16 in this case) and can be held up from being made official by an assortment of issues, biggest of which is age verification nowadays.  I wouldn't read too much into the delay.

I would however like to at least get a list of some kind of the other 14 players, just for future reference.

JMU, MLB Trade Rumors' front page right now has all 16 players' names, positions, and locations, I think.

Top 15 All-Time International Bonuses

It is hard to take much from that list, as only 5 players on it signed before 2008 (all of which were busts), but it certainly does not add much weight to the argument for having a single player make up most of your IFA budget.

Where do those top 15 rank on prospect lists?  OK, 14 b/c Wily Mo tops any and all lists.

I agree. I would like to see it done on a year by year basis over the past 10 to 15 years so we'd get a better picture.

I don't.

Eventually one will pan out.

Edit: This will sound like a complaint... but it's not... but shouldn't most of these guys be 15/16 and not 17/18? I feel like that's a bit old to be signing IFA's.

Any of the guys 19 or older are suspect as prospects. Sure, they could develop but why did it take 3+ years for them to be found?

Daniel Cabrera clones? Long shot, low cost guys to fill out the roster in the DSL? I'm guessing.

My thoughts as well. I guess even DSL teams need organizational depth.

Only 5 of the 15 guys are under 18 years old. Not sure if that is a good sign.

This time of year is not the when the "big" international signings take place. Let's wait to see what happens this summer.

Not looking for the $2M guy ... hoping to see 10-20 $100-200K ones

I'm hoping for a few 100K guys mixed with 300-400K guys. The system seriously lacks quality depth.
